I'm guessing that, in the era of the bomb chuckers, the cavalry wasn't just there to look pretty.

I have a priny 8x12 of a French cuirassier from the 2nd Empire period, while pictures are impressive can only hint at what the Napoleonic era was like.

Rare film of French Cuirassiers charging, filmed by the Lumière brothers in 1896.

These cavalrymen were real soldiers, but, unfortunately, the heyday of the heavy cavalry was over. France had 13 regiments of Cuirassiers in 1914.

That is the only non-theatrical footage I've seen of a charge. Super illuminating stuff.

….Submitted before editing, apologies. It's amazing how a few seconds of film can clarify all of the ink spent on descriptions of how a charge works. (I get it, worth 1000 words) many thanks for the link.

One for you, 14Bore…

Glad you enjoyed the film, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART. I understand what you are saying.

Btw… A quick count of the cuirassiers in shot is approximately sixty, which would represent about a company, or half squadron. French Cuirassier regiments had four squadrons. Just imagine…
