"Gladiator was a film released in 2000 starring Russell Crowe that focused on General Maximus Decimus Meridius, who was enslaved after escaping his execution for not supporting the new Roman emperor Commodus (staring Joaquin Phoenix). Maximus rises as a well skilled gladiator, eventually making it to Rome where he participates in the gladiator games sponsored by Commodus. After Commodus learns of Maximus, both characters want to kill the other. Maximus attempts to conspire with those in the Senate who dislike Commodus, while Commodus attempts to have Maximus killed in the gladiator battles…." Main page link Amicalement Armand

There was a guy named Marcus Aurelius and a guy named Commodus and a woman named Lucilla, but that's about it… :) |

What do you mean it's not true? You'll be telling me next that the outstandingly accurate Mel Gibson trilogy, Braveheart, The Patriot and Gallipoli, was just a load of anti-British tosh. |

How accurate: In this scene Marcus Aurelius says, "for 25 years I've conquered spilled blood". He was only emperor for 21 years. YouTube link |

As I was leaving the theatre way back in 2000 I overheard one movie goer say to his friend regarding the end: "That's like Abraham Lincoln fighting Robert E. Lee to the death…" |

I needed a laugh! Using "Gladiator" & "historically accurate" in the same sentence. |

There was an Emperor named Marcus Aurelius, he had a son named Commodus as well as a daughter. Emperor dies, Commodus become Emperor, he then created weeks of spectacular gladiator combats to bring back Rome to its glory years. He trained as a gladiator and fought as one. People thought he was nuts, his sister tried to assassinate him with the help of the Pretorian Guard. He was betrayed and killed eventually. So historical it was not. Great entertainment though. |
