"Genocide" is a verb? And Texas is going to "remove" the Mexicans, but be heavily influenced by Mexican culture? I'm also still working on a Mexican War if Texas is not admitted to the Union and has resolved the boundary dispute with Mexico. Mind you, I can still see a "Bear Flag Republic" uprising of some sort, but why a Mexican War? And if the Californians toss out the Mexican government on their own and the Republic of Texas is there as an example, why should California join the United States? Anyway, I'm grateful Texas consented to join the Union. Others should be as well. In the words of Bill Mauldin "you Brits woulda lost this war if it wasn't for your allies like Texas and Ireland." |

At risk of high-jacking the thread, I always thought it was interesting that four states still refer to themselves as "Commonwealths" – Virginia, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Kentucky – along with the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and N. Marianias Islands. Commonwealth generally being defined as "an independent country or community, especially a democratic republic." |

Robert, I hadn't seen that quote by Bill Maudlin before. That's really good. Thanks for posting it. |

Brass, one of the advantages of a Federal system is that you can always feel superior to someone for something. A New Mexican friend of mine once told me that the motto of the New Mexican Department of Education is "Thank Heaven for Alabama!" |

It should be Mississippi according to the Alabama officials here. I lived in Texas for five years and heard every day how it was superior to every other state in the union. Brass is wrong. Every state is rated by many different systems on numerous issues. I am not sure if Texas is on the bottom (50th) of any survey. |

By the way, I was told that in the admission to the union bill, there was a provision which would allow Texas to divide to form three to five different states. I never looked it up to verify it. I know that several large counties in Alabama were allowed to split into two counties if they had desired. So the provision was common in the 1800s. |

Never happen, Rudy. Which of the new states would get custody of the Alamo? |
