What if strawberries tasted of meat? What if cats barked like dogs? What if people stopped posting what ifs? Though occasionally amusing, they always lead to stupid arguments that can't be proven one way or the other.

We couldn't have afforded to.
It offers no strategic advantage.

Besides it wasn't a colonial presence it was a League of Nations Mandate handed over to the UN after Yalta.

While I sort of agree with foxweasel, the more intriguing what-if is: none of the colonial powers *wanted* Palestine after WWI; They tried to get the US to take the mandate. What if we had accepted?

Yes, and as we see with both organizations … they had/have very limited power to do really anything in the long run. Unless the factions agree … to anything … And stop the killing/dying generally …

Well, yeah. They are only the sum of their parts with no independent existence.

And as we see … the UN gets/is very fractured, polarized, factionalized, etc., in many cases. E.g. Just look at the P5 –
The UK, USA, France, Russia, China …

The P5 + 1, add Germany …

Albeit better to have the UN than not … in most cases …

IIRC, there are 195 "nations" in the world. 193 are in the UN. The Vatican is one that is not, but that makes sense, I forget who the other one is …

And in many cases in respect to Europe, it comes down to NATO members who are also in the UN vs. the former USSR/Russia and it's current "allies"(?). Then add the PRC … It's fortunate that anything gets done … frown
