After the backlash of his role as Jar Jar Binks nearly two decades ago, "Star Wars" actor Ahmed Best says he once considered taking his life…

The character sucked, that's no reflection on the actor. Especially considering the amount of CGI involved. Haden Christianson on the other hand…

Dn Jackson I disagree with what you have to say about Jar Jar Binks.

To me he was a very good character IMHO.

This is so freaking weird and tragic. Read that the actress who played Rose in TLJ deleted her social media account due to incessant harassment and death threats.

All the s*#t going on in our world and folks are getting worked up over fictional SF characters that these real people were hired to play.

What's wrong with this picture?

Don't blame the actor, blame the writer/director/producer…

It's always the suits that mess things up…

Jar Jar has his precedents in 1930's Hollywood, in the eye-rolling, cowardly, "African American" sidekick, like Stepin Fetchit.

It was a horrible stereotype then, and it's a horrible stereotype now.

On a related bit Jake Loyd was a horrible actor but he was a kid, the cr*p fans put him through is unforgivable as well. Star Wars fandom is more toxic by the day. That is bound to happen when mixing nostalgia and sequels.

Captain Gideon; We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Either way any dislike should be taken out on the writers and director. The actor on this one did a decent job considering what he was given.

Roderick; The fact the character had a vaguely Caribbean accent doesn't equate him with the old racial characters of the 1930s. Jar Jar was just a poorly done comic side kick.

No, there are clear parallels. The walk, the literal eye-rolling, the buffoonish idiocy (okay, that true of all slapstick sidekicks, but the others stand).

The "Racial characters" didn't have Caribbean accents, they had Deep South accents.

And the Trade Federation with their obvious Japanese accents.

Jar Jar Binks was the only redeeming factor in those particular movies. He was the high point and the rest went drastically down into the crapper from there!

Jar Jar was a brilliant character in comparison to anything in the current Soy Wars trilogy.

I've never quite understood the hate on Jar Jar.

Were there some attempted comedic / slapstick moments that just grated and felt out of place? Yep.

Did it totally destroy the movie? Nope.

A bit like the attempted comedic items in TLJ. I would prefer the movie without them because they pull you out of the moment more so than the characters involved are bad.

I enjoyed Jar Jar. He was funny

Jar Jar was supposed to be annoying, hence his frequent put downs by Qui Gon and Obi Wan.
I never minded the character, and he was a lot more sensible as his character was developed in SW: The Clone Wars animated series.
