Sitting here sipping ice tea, outside temperature climbing and re-reading the Sudan theme year of Dick Bryant's, "The Courier." I loved that magazine. And Hal Thinglum's, "Midwest Wargamers Association Newsletter," or more affectionately, MWAN. The only thing like them nowadays is, "Warning Order." I know we're living at a time when we as miniatures gamers have never had it so good. Yet…I yearn for those older, seemingly simpler times. >sigh< Just an old fart reminiscing. |

Yep, every once in awhile I will pull out an MWAN and read through it. I may be in the minority, but I prefer the simplicity of figures from "back in the day." |

I still return to my stack of MWANs regularly for inspiration. |

Hi Ragbones, may I suggest Lone Warrior as a magazine of possible interest? Link to sample articles page : link Link to how to subscribe : lonewarriorswa.com/subscribe It's the journal of the Solo Wargamers Association – and is written by gamers for gamers. There's lots of stuff about new games, often whole games and free rules, in every issue. All the reviews and such have been transferred to the Web Site (here: lonewarriorswa.com/reviews ), so every issue if jam packed with good stuff (IMHO!). You'll recognise some names from MWAN in there. |

Thanks 20thmaine, I'll check it out. Sadly, all but 3 of my old MWAN's suffered irreparable water damage a couple years ago and had to be recycled. I would have liked to have replaced them but the cost of so doing on the secondary market was too dear. How I looked forward to receiving each new issue of wargaming goodness from Hal! |

Ragbones. I have about two dozen old MWANs from the '80s if you want them. A few full years and odds and ends. Problem is you pay for shipping from Canada. Don't know the cost but your call. They are in a get rid of box. I'll be reviewing them, when I get to it, keeping a few or more likely scanning the articles then out they go somewhere. Your call. They are all near perfect. Wargamers Digest as well. |

That's a very kind offer, Stephen. I'd love to have them. Any chance of obtaining an estimate of the mailing? I wouldn't want to spend too much. |

I have 27 issues from 35 to 60 plus 29. It will take me a little while to review them. Can you send me a PM with contact info? Stephen |

Hi Stephen, sorry I didn't reply sooner. I'd lost track of the thread. Are you a member? There isn't a "P" by your name for private messaging. |

Courier and MWAN were great. I posted the index of all 'modern' Courier (8.5x11-inch size) issues here on TMP (broken up into several postings). Nice to pick and poke through an issue from time to time. I'm also fond of the old PW Review with its emphasis on wargame mechanics -- so fond I secured rights from the estate of Wally Simon and have been reprinting 'best of' the PWR (up to 8 volumes now, available from On Military Matters [plug]). I'll second the vote for Warning Order -- right up there in layout and content quality with glossy 'zines like WI, MW, and WSS. In theory, blogs and so forth offer the same hobby feel, but they're scattered all over the web and scattered in terms of quality, instead of popping once every couple of months in your mailbox. If I recall, someone tried to republish a sort of 'Best of Blogs' as a magazine, but that lasted only a couple issues for, my guess, lack of subscriptions. |
