Just throwing this out there… Fall In! 2018 is right around the corner so to speak. Event submissions will open shortly, as will vendor registration.

I know everyone is gearing up for Historicon 2018…. it will be a great show, but I just wanted to throw this out there….

capncarp26 Jun 2018 9:23 a.m. PST

Thanks, Dan: one tends to get focused on the here-and-now. Keeping us abreast of the long view necessities is very helpful.

Poniatowski26 Jun 2018 9:41 a.m. PST

Fall In! 2018 dates are up on the web page, please remember that these are subject to change. Check back often!

Poniatowski26 Jun 2018 11:17 a.m. PST

Also, I wanted to add…. the senior staff/contacts are not updated yet. If anyone has a question, please direct it to me form the Fall In! website.

TSD10126 Jun 2018 4:58 p.m. PST

Won't even be able to start thinking about it until after historicon

Poniatowski27 Jun 2018 4:25 a.m. PST

I know, but…. I wanted folks to know events will be opening and that they can submit… just like the timing for CW and Hcon.

historygamer27 Jun 2018 4:45 a.m. PST

What's the theme?

TSD10127 Jun 2018 9:15 a.m. PST

My group will submit together again, hopefully we can get some tables next to each other like we'll have at Historicon. I want to do something historical, so that leaves Samurai, or finding a 15mm ww2 system that isn't FoW to use my figures with.

Of course, samurai games seem to be very popular (mine sold out awhile ago) so maybe I'll stick with that.

holien27 Jun 2018 9:57 a.m. PST

TSD get into a Fireball Forward game at HCon a great WW2 ruleset and works well with 15mm

Grumble8710628 Jun 2018 9:48 p.m. PST

TSD101, how are your 15 mm WW2 figures based, individually or with more than one figure per stand? That will affect what rules you consider.

TSD10129 Jun 2018 4:29 a.m. PST

TSD101, how are your 15 mm WW2 figures based

Its about 75% Battlefront, 25% PSC and the infantry/gun teams are all based on FoW or PSC bases. Vehicles are unbased.

Bowman29 Jun 2018 6:38 a.m. PST

I can't make Historicon this year frown I am already looking forward to Fall-In and am preparing my game.

Poniatowski29 Jun 2018 6:46 a.m. PST

Lol… lets move this back toward being about Fall In! 2018.

Theme: Revolutions & Civil Wars and those that start them.

oldnorthstate29 Jun 2018 5:06 p.m. PST

"Fall In dates are subject to change"???? Since when are the dates still up in the air four months out from the convention? That makes no sense, unless there is a major problem with the Host that none of use peons knows about.

And, shouldn't the wording of the theme be "…and those that fight them" rather than "those that start them"…is the them for the American Revolution limited to Samuel Adams and John Hancock rather then the battles of the revolution?

Command Decision may be a possibility; each stand = a platoon.

Poniatowski02 Jul 2018 10:47 a.m. PST

NO.. dates are solid for the show, don't be silly….. Other dates are subject to change… like event submission and other deadlines, etc… you guys already know that, lol!

You can dissect the theme any way you want, or, you can spend more time being happy there is a show and that it will be a great time. Again… you are being tooo literal…

It can be any battles during any revolution, uprising or civil war.

… lol…. and don't even start on civil wars and how that is an oxymoron!

Grumble8710602 Jul 2018 11:32 a.m. PST

Just for fun, follow the Fall-In! link to the theme "Revolutions & Civil Wars and those that start them" and see how many of the people you can name.

And don't be picky about the word "start". grin

words matter…

Poniatowski17 Jul 2018 8:14 a.m. PST

With Hcon a very pleasant memory now.. it is time to start thinking about Fall In! 2018….

It will be here before you know it! There are already over 20 vendors in the system and events are rolling in also….

Thank you all.

Regardless of perceptions, etc… Fall In! will only be allowing 1 pre-register game per day… I also want to move back to event info on your main badge if possible…. I saw too may folks who preregistered for 2 games a day and went and got more, basically leaving very little for the day trippers, etc… AND… without the info on their badge.. they could come back and get more games if they liked… well, at least one more game for 3 a day. I heard the same complaint…. too many no shows. BUT.. honestly…. I cannot say whether there was an increase or it as just more noticeable because we were tracking them.

As for cancelations at Hcon.. yes, that information is available post show. We had a lot of legitimate reasons for cancellations, All were unfortunate.

We had a guy come by our table and say he and a friend signed up for two different games, and were going to see which one they liked more before committing to one or the other.

This kind of behavior is absolutely reprehensible and should get someone kicked out of the convention.

Ploogak17 Jul 2018 1:03 p.m. PST

Dan, you were in charge of the event desk. If you identified a problem during the show why am I only hearing about it now by reading it on TMP? I look forward to reading your AAR.

Rotundo18 Jul 2018 3:28 a.m. PST

Well, my son's and I are registered GMs. One D&D game, one Walking Dead game brought to tabletop. One Salerno Landings for the 75th anniversary of Italy landings. Already looking forward to it.

Reserved my dealer's tables!

kayjay18 Jul 2018 3:20 p.m. PST

My 2 C
holding the GMs free reg will mean the treasurer individually issuing refunds. Many of them, and these are not trivial, and each with a added fee.
The combined events table/managers could easily track which GM CNX – they may all-ready do so – and at some point place the repeat offender on notice.
It would be easy to have YM print out for each GM the NAMES of the pre-reg people and he could pick it up at the events table. The GM will then know who stiffed him.

Lastly, get rid of event tickets. YM will not let you overlap game pre reg. Solves the two games at same time exploit. Saves $$$ and event desk staff hrs.

Oh I really like this. If people are holding GMs to high standards and accountability, lets hold the players to it too.

Poniatowski23 Jul 2018 8:07 a.m. PST

Joby, it is coming.. and, it was an observation I didn't realize I made, until I started reading the post. believe me, it is all in the AAR.

Getting a print out of everyone and what games they pre-regged for is an interesting concept.. definitely very doable… but I wonder what time it would take at the table to look up… if the names are by ALPHA… then it could be really easy.

And, TSD101…. yes, that does kind of suck… BUT, it could be perfectly legitimate.. IF…. they were allowed 2 games a day or even one and then got one on site… they could feasibly take the same time slot. I do get it though…. crappy for a GM!!!!!

capncarp23 Jul 2018 9:06 a.m. PST

"Getting a print out of everyone and what games they pre-regged for is an interesting concept.. definitely very doable… but I wonder what time it would take at the table to look up… if the names are by ALPHA… then it could be really easy."

If the info is stored in an Excel file, magical things can be done in manipulating and sorting it. I do this at work every freakin' day.

Rotundo24 Jul 2018 10:03 a.m. PST

Over policing something that is supposed to be fun and free may have unintentionally run people off. I get keeping GM's accountable financially, but paying guest?

Poniatowski25 Jul 2018 4:48 a.m. PST

If badge information can go back to the way it was… even with print on demand, that would be a good thing. Everyone was OK with it and it caused no grief… required no lists, etc…. we shall see.

And Rotundo… you may have a very valid point.. but I must express…. when I go to a baseball game for fun and I get my ticket and it has an assigned seat…. I must sit there, I cannot go and sit in the box seats, etc… I know folks do it.. and just because you can… doesn't mean you should….

We need to know if the Flea Market will yet again be upstairs in the black hole.

Double G26 Jul 2018 12:52 p.m. PST

"We need to know if the Flea Market will yet again be upstairs in the black hole."

Considering that the renovations are moving along at a snails pace, I'd say the answer is yes, so plan accordingly.

Either stock up on coal miners helmets or bring a really, really, really long extension cord.

TSD10126 Jul 2018 5:09 p.m. PST

Either stock up on coal miners helmets or bring a really, really, really long extension cord.

Or in my case, forgo spending any money on a table and spend more time in the dealer's hall?

Russ Lockwood27 Jul 2018 11:06 a.m. PST

>"We need to know if the Flea Market will yet again be upstairs in the black hole."

Likely.

What I would suggest is allowing the flea market to be in the Lampeter on Sunday morning. No games were there at Historicon. Easier on the sellers and buyers.

Double G27 Jul 2018 12:02 p.m. PST

"Or in my case, forgo spending any money on a table and spend more time in the dealer's hall?"

A large number of attendees use that hard earned cash to pay part of their convention expenses or spend it in the dealer hall, so I'd encourage you to make the best of the lighting and by doing so, part of the expense you incur in attending the convention will be earned back in the flea market.

Good luck.

as a person who actually brought a headlamp, i only thought about bringing it out once.

capncarp27 Jul 2018 7:24 p.m. PST

As I was coming off the Rt.30 bypass, I pulled into the little shopping center off to the right. Dashing into the Harbor Freight store, I picked up some small LED flashlights, specifically for said purpose of stalking the Wally's Attic bargains.
Everybody forget their Boy Scout training--"Be Prepared"?

Skip2a21 Aug 2018 6:49 a.m. PST

How/when can you sign up for the Hobby University painting classes at Fall In? My son wants to attend but I can't seem to find the information on them.

Thanks,

Skip

Rotundo21 Aug 2018 10:12 a.m. PST

Hi Skip, I have two boys in tow with me almost every Con. The Hobby U folks are just Aces! Simply look at the Pel when you first get there and mind your times. They are very inclusive and usually can take you right away. I sat thru many of the classes myself.

Skip2a21 Aug 2018 11:28 a.m. PST

Do we need to preregister for them or is it the day of the classes?

Thank you for the quick response!

Skip

Edit: Not really sure what a Pel is?

Ember52 Supporting Member of TMP21 Aug 2018 12:23 p.m. PST

Skip,

The PEL is the Preliminary Events List. It eill appear on the Historicon website. Jt contains information on games, tournaments, Hobby U painting and craft sessions, and guest speakers. Keep an eye out both here and on the HMGS sites for information on when the PEL is posted and when preregistration begins.

TheWarStoreSweetie21 Aug 2018 5:20 p.m. PST

I teach in the Hobby U. We have a certain amount of spots available for preregistration, but tickets are also given out the day of the classes in Hobby U. I think the Friday classes will start at noon and tickets will be available around 11. Saturday classes start at 10 and tickets are available around 9:30. Please note that some classes require the use of Exacto knives and we ask that a parent sit with folks under the age of 15. All of the instructors are generally around and available to answer questions or help with specific skills. I hope this helps and we will see you at Fall In.

47Ronin23 Aug 2018 2:55 p.m. PST

Skip,

Now that you know what the PEL is, you (and everyone else) still has time to submit a game for Fall In before the PEL deadline on Friday.

FYI, I made some other suggestions on your "Looking For Players" topic.

Good luck.
