link There is always a sense of achievement when the first unit for a new project is born. Will is grow and flourish into a great horde of 28mm loveliness or lie festering at the back of the cupboard with the other half forgotten ideas? Here is a 28mm Perry Miniatures Italian Wars Pike block dressed up in the colours of the Swiss Canton of Lucerne. Lots of pics, discussion on the figs and even a You Tube video on't blog, enjoy ! Lovely painting. The Perry figures are perfect for the Burgundian War. Not so great for the Italian Wars. Even Fornovo might be too late for them. I shudder at the thought of gaming with the Gush rules. Great for their time but game systems have evolved as much as the figures have. |

Marcus, Wargames rules have moved on from those times which is why I am modernising them, they worked for many people back in the day so they can't be that bad. You will just have to wait to criticise my new version. The problem is what is the alternative ? Re the figures being wrong, I am looking at an early army anyway and replaced many of the heads with the alternative Swiss / Italian heads for that reason. I am happy with them and reserve the right to paint my toy soldiers anyway I like :-) |

I say this yarkshire as one who has painted up 200+ Perry Swiss pike for the Burgundian Wars. The Perry figures are more late Medieval than early Renaissance although I would be inclined to use them for Fornovo in 1497 but not for the 1500s. I've decided to use Artizan for a French/Swiss Italian Wars army for the 1510-30 period. I really do like the Impetus rules for this period. Originally designed for the Italian Wars.

Cheers Marcus, I have looked at Impetus before and they are quite popular at my local club. However they do seem to be more of an Army List / Points / Competition set like the WRG rules. How do they cope outside the 2 to 3 hours points based games ? My initial thought with Impetus was that they would collapse under the weight of a larger game, say 40 plus units a side over a couple of days. Having played them, do you think they would stand up to the big game ? Regards Ken The Yarkshire Gamer |

We used to play larger multi player games although lately we player smaller one on one 400 point games I put on the Battle of Magnesia a few years ago at a large US convention. Probably about 50 units a side. We played the game with 4 players aside, most who didn't know the game system, in about 3 1/2 hours. In these kinds of games the normal initiative system has to be modified. I can share our approach with you if you are interested.
