Who is your favourite anti-hero? Mine is Hagen von Tronje who slew Siegfried. It could be a character from an old legend, but also from a comic-book or a novel. |

Bart Bandy, of the Bandy Papers. But only because I discovered Bandy before reading Fraser's Flashman Papers. |

Bartholomew W Bandy.. Wow, now there is a character from the past – it's forty years since I read those books. He predates Flashman, for sure. Not sure I would call him an anti hero, though – he was a skilled Sopwith Dolphin pilot, with a good score of downed Dastardly Huns, it was only on the ground that his more "eccentriic" side emerged. I did love his interactions with his in-laws, though, particularly his initial encounter with his mother in law… |

Bandy +++ Fifty kills in WWI, lands on his CO, gets shot down in a Dolphin and nabs the hun's D.VII after he lands to say, gotcha. Off to Russia to help stop the revolution, returns to be a cabinet minister and booze smuggler, etc., etc.. What's not to love? |

More love for Bandy (author Donald Jack). The original WW1 stories were my father's favourite books. For anti-heroes I'd go with Malcolm Reynolds, Clint Eastwood's western cowboys. Scott Mariani's Ben Hope is pretty cool too. |

Josey Wales (and most of the other Clint Eastwood roles) Sgt Steiner (Cross of Iron) Conan Malcolm Reynolds and Bandy are great as well |

For serious choices I'd agree with those who listed Conan, Clint's Western roles and Flashman. I've never read the Elric stories. A more frolicsome list would include the classic Looney Tunes line-up of Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Wile E. Coyote and Yosemite Sam – a distinctly nasty bunch. Strangely, I wouldn't include Bugs in that number, though I'd have to exercise some grey matter to explain why. |

Rhett Butler, more of a rogue than an anti-hero. But with some of the other suggestions here he probably fits right in. |

All of the Guardians of the Galaxy are anti-heroes, but Rocket Raccoon would be my favorite of that bunch. Logan (Wolverine) is at times an anti-hero. Loki (both the Norse god and the Marvel version) counts as an antihero. But remember, a villain is not an anti-hero, unless he is the protagonist of the story. Thus, Daffy by himself is sort of an anti-hero (though I'm not certain the term truly applies even then), but when appearing as a foil for Bugs, he's not one. The Dirty Dozen are anti-heroes. George Peppard's character in Blue Max is an anti-hero. Captain Jack Sparrow. |

Oberst Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine) in "The Eagle Has Landed" is my favorite anti-hero. |

noun noun: anti-hero a central character in a story, movie, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes. ------------------------------------------ Some names mentioned so far are more hero than anti-hero. IMHO, Conan is a hero, so is Richard Sharpe. Both "good guys" at heart who use their physical prowess to defeat evil. Now Dr. Who on the other hand, a physical weakling or at most normal, uses unconventional methods to defeat evil. Anti-heros don't go in guns a blazing and swords a slashing. Even Elric, although cynical and moody, exhibits hero like behavior. |

The Punisher and Deadpool--'cause they're in the comics, man, and neither follows the comic book hero code! Their on-screen versions aren't too bad, either. Conan was mostly a hero, though he does have some anti-hero attributes, I think. Man With No Name/Blondie/Josey Wales, great, too. Raymond Reddington makes a great one, too (though most episodes of Blacklist don't seem focus on him). Basically, I can't choose just one. Rob |

Would you consider the 7 from The Magnificent Seven as anti-hero's? Each of them had real flaws and struggled with their demons to do good. I would also agree that all of the Marvel anti-heroes (Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, Punisher, Jessica Jones, etc) along with Archer (my fave) fall into that category as well. I don't know the DC universe as well, do they have similar types of characters? |
