It now appears that the Aztecs and another Mesoamerican civilization known as the Mixtecs mined their own turquoise, rather than trading for it with northerners, reports Ars Technica.

Well, that certainly changes things.

I consider Aztec history human sacrifice and getting conquered by the Spanish.
How does discovering that they mined their own turquoise rewrite Aztec history???

It doesn't. It does call into question how much American SW turquoise was traded to Mexico and, possibly, the size and extent of the trade network but, it is well known and documented that a trade network did exist, as is evident by the discovery of Mesoamerican items such as cacao, shells, macaw and parrot feathers and bones, and copper bells in the American SW.

Ya that's just the headline of the Fox News article. An attention grabbing one at that.

It is known that the Aztecs traded as far north as modern day America and as far south as the Mayan cities. It is interesting that they operated their own mines but it is hardly earth shattering. And as Winston points out, this had little bearing on what ultimately happened to them.

How come the Aztecs don't need the "known as" the Mixtecs get?

Does the newspaper think the Aztecs spoke English?

I think that most people know who the Aztecs were but the Mixtecs are less well known.
