Can anyone recommend some books to me on the armies, organisations etc. of the SYW. I am new to this period and would like to understand the forces better. |

You should visit Jim Purky's Fife and Drum Forum if you are getting into the SYW period. You will find quite a few knowledgeable and helpful people there. fifeanddrumminis.proboards.com |

The books by Christopher Duffy on the Prussians and Austrian armies are great resources and good reads. There are also several, good sites about, in particular the Seven Years War Project at kronoskaf.com. |

Thanks. I have the SYW Project bookmarked for uniforms etc. What I need is basic knowledge of the period i.e. what/who were light troops, who used battalion guns etc. along with an overall view of the main protaganists and their differences. |

Duffy's The Army of Frederick the Great covers the information you seek, albeit from the Prussian perspective, but equally applicable to other armies of the, period. The Nosworthy book is more granular and is a good book to own too. Fritz |

Kronoskaf (Seven Years War) com is best known for its uniform and flag references, but with a little investigation it does have the information you are looking for. Most of the major powers have a description of the tactics used and these can be found under the Infantry, Cavalry or artillery sections for each country. Secondly, do look at the ‘e-books' section as here you will find treatises in English, French and German which are a primary source for the above. Cheers, |
