"One of the strange little stories of World War II involves the aircraft carrier USS Robin, which didn't really exist.

There was a carrier that sailors called the Robin. She and her sailors were underneath U.S. Navy command, took part in American battles and launched U.S. planes with American pilots. She certainly was a carrier, not to be confused with another USS Robin, a minesweeper.

But the carrier Robin, generally speaking, was an illusion…."

I'm normally pretty good when it comes to obscure Pacific Theater trivia, but this is one I had completely missed. Very interesting!

Not entirely accurate. Article in the "Armchair General"?

Her ship's crew was British, but her aircrew and aircraft were American.

Her aircrew were British as well, and she deployed to the Pacific with NAS 882, 896, and 898 flying Martlet (RN Wildcat) fighters, and NAS 832 flying Avengers. All RN aircraft were temporarily painted in USN fashion, as was the ship.

During part of the deployment, Victorious engaged in experimental cross-deck operations with Saratoga, which meant that some USN pilots flew from her, and some RN pilots flew from Saratoga.

Source: Hobbs, "The British Pacific Fleet", and numerous other reliable sources.
