Inspired by the thread "Best non fiction small unit combat book you have read?" I was wondering what is the best non-fiction book that you have read set in any war.

I have read a fair few, but the best IMHO was a book that took me totally by surprise "The Blue Door", the heartbreaking memoir of a 10-year old child's imprisonment in a Japanese POW camp during WWII.

"The Last Valley", set during the Thirty Years War. Great book.

This poll is too broad, as it covers everything from history to biography to examinations of technology ("Jane's Fighting Ships." etc.), and even classic literature. Consider the following non-fiction titles that fit the definition:
The Bible
The Punic Wars (Livy)
Xenophon's Persian Exposition
Thucydides's History of the Peloponnesian War
Caesar's Gallic Wars
and so on…
And then you have memoirs like those of Ulysses Grant and others.
Manchester's The Last Lion qualifies under the terms.
Really, it's just too many possible books, all great, all contenders.
And I couldn't begin to pick which one was "the best."

Maybe this needs to be restricted in form, or split into other polls, like best memoir of a military individual (commander or common soldier), best bio of a military individual, etc..

Parzival, what has the historical media board got to do with polls, most of which I find to be tedious at best?

Some good book suggestions, and Jarrovian's mention of RV Jones 'Most Secret War' is a new one for me to look out for thumbs up

Ignore mine, I thought it said "fiction" book.

My bad, Huscarle. We've had so many "best book/music/film/haiku" polls lately that I assumed this was another one; I didn't look at the overall board title.

In the spirit of things, a more recent work:

YEAR ZERO: A HISTORY OF 1945 by Ian Buruma. Haunting look at the aftermath of WWII in Europe and the consequences for the population, and the often forgotten long term effects of the war.
