The two-and-a-half-month gap between the arrival of Iwo Jima and the March departure of aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is the longest gap the Navy has had without a capital ship — a carrier or a big-deck amphibious assault ship — in the Gulf in recent memory… link |

An interesting way to read this is "for the first time in decades the Pentagon was comfortable not having constant power projection in the Persian, sorry, Arabian Gulf". This could be because the Arab states are collaborating and taking the initiative in Yemen, indicating that to a new and welcome degree they are working together and taking responsibility for the region. Or could be because U. S. Central command doesn't feel like anyone is about to try anything. That's a little weird, since the US pulling out of the Iran deal could result in more small ship provocations. I don't think it's because the Navy is overly strained to meet all it's obligations. I don't think it's because all the carriers are somewhere else because of trouble expected in some other region. In any case, it *feels* like good news… |
