I've seen lots of the female decedents and they look nothing like those two. link |

And I have been on a Mayan pyramid and the steps are nowhere near as nice as those! |

@Frederick Agreed! It's as if the stairs should be flipped up. In Mesoamérica not only is each step higher than you'd expect, but they are extremely short. It's like your heel is always left hanging. @jdginaz My wife and I were driving in Yucatán, near the Belize border, when we saw some little kids walking on the side of the road. We were in need of directions, so we stopped to ask. Not only did they turn out to be a full grown Maya couple*, they couldn't understand Spanish (or English, it was near Belize). They had to call out to their kids, so they could come and serve as interpreters. It felt like we had taken a detour into the early sixteenth century. Dan * The wife looked very much like this Lancandon Maya adult female:

@jdginaz I've seen lots of the female decedents A decedent is a person who has died. I believe you meant "descendants", and I'll bet auto-correct was not your friend. |

@Cacique Caribe In Mesoamérica not only is each step higher than you'd expect, but they are extremely short. It's like your heel is always left hanging. I was at Angkor Wat last winter (and actually all over the temple complexes outside Siem Reap) and noticed the same thing. Our guide said that temple steps were intentionally high and narrow to remind those climbing them that it is difficult to get to heaven. Maybe the Mayans had a similar view. I liked these figures the last time Tango posted them, and I still like them. |

Oberlindes You've been to Angkor Wat? Wow, that complex is still on my bucket list! Dan |

By the way, when I watched Apocalypto for the first time, and saw the male and female peasants and nobles, it brought back so many details from the eyewitness accounts I had read in my youth. I remember the plucking off of all facial and body hair, facial scarification, the "sculpted" wigs, the use of stone lip plugs and the teeth filed down and inlaid with jade … the standards of beauty of their wealthy class seem so alien to so many of us living today. "the standards of beauty of their wealthy class seem so alien to so many of us living today." You haven't been to a college recently have you.:) I'd say that the lip plugs and hair shaving are quite common now and the body paint has been replaced by tattoo's. So, the more things change… I could swear I've seen some hair styles like that as well.:) |
