Hi all,

Getting increasingly interested in late Ren. stuff, and was hoping for recommendations for reading. I'm looking for a solid intro to the period, something reasonably accessible and comprehensive. Where should I start?

Mallet, Shaw: "The Italian Wars 1494-1559"

If you want an immensiley readable small facet read "The Black Band of Giovanni" from Maruicio Arfaioli. Its actually about the Black Band after Giovannis death and covers the Italian army during the Sacco di Roma and their following siege of the Imperials at Nicce.

The best on that is that Arfaioli offers it as free pdf:

And thank you from me as well – for the .pdf, and the recommendation.

mghFond,

How are the Blue Moon Italian wars minis?

I have a load of Venaxia and Old Glory minis, would they match in?

I am looking at expanding my Italian Wars collection

I second the Mallet and Shaw book. It's a good, solid, basic narrative that covers more facets than most of the 'general histories' that focus only on the Franco-Spanish aspect.

Here are the books I have in English.

Most of these books were relatively easy to find, and most were not that pricey. You will not find the perfect 'wargamer's guide', I'm afraid, so don't bother looking.

Hope that helps,

James

As far as Italian Wars foot, Blue Moon are a tad bit heftier and taller than Venexia and Old Glory 15s (although I would not have a problem mixing them in the same units). I took a quick snapshot--pardon the blurriness:

The Venexia and Blue Moon gendarmes appear to be more compatible than the foot. I do not have OG15s gendarmes. Blue Moon on the left and Venexia on the right

Horses (L to R: Blue Moon and Venexia--pardon the unfinished paint job):

Thanks for the images condottiere. I am painting some bluemoon italian wars, they are a great replacement for Venexia
