One of our readers suggests he was. Do you agree?

My Da', who was one of many thousands who served under Halsey didn't think so.

But then again my pop, who was a very conservative USA Republican Party voter, deeply respected PotUS USA Democratic Party Harry Truman.

Wonder why…

(Something to do with the Pacific Theater of WWII.)

Cocky yes and Sometimes too aggressive for his own fleet's good.

"I know this book! Your conclusions are all wrong, Ryan. Halsey acted stupidly." :)

I believe that Admiral Sprague and the members of Taffy 3 would say so.

Those that survived Samar that is.

Not only did Halsey leave 7th Fleet and the beaches exposed, but he then failed to respond to the call for assistance when Kurita attacked.

Should have been court-martialed.

I assume that the question refers to Admiral William Halsey USN and not to Admiral Lionel Halsey RN (they were very distant relatives) who was Captain of the Fleet at the Battle of Jutland.

I thought it meant Uncle Albert …

Rather cocky but what was needed early on. Later they had to live with the legend they had created.

Halsey was court martial proof.
Until very late in the war, the Typhoon.

You forgot the 's', Winston. Typhoons. Cobra in December '44
and Connie in May '45. My dad's DE survived 'em both.

Yes among other things. He should have been court martialed or at least sent home. Hard to court martial an Admiral when he was just on the cover of Time. Two typhoons and Leyte Gulf, terrible.

Careful about using that term "Cocky"! Some romance writer had trademarked it and is suing anyone using it! :)

"il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres"

(it is wise to kill an admiral from time to time to encourage the others).

All I can think about is "Wild Bill" pursuing the Japanese fleet after Midway and running into to Yamamoto's battle wagons in a night action. Yamato vs. Hornet and Enterprise in the middle of the night…just what we needed.

Old Contemptibles02 Jul 2018 8:08 p.m. PST

Cocky and over aggressive. Too predictable.

Having missed out on all the 'Big' battles, Coral Sea, Midway, the Philippine Sea, Halsey was probably just itching to fight a huge decisive naval battle against the Japanese. He was probably too eager.
