Wow, so there were actually TWO Boer republics at that point? Interesting!

PS. I had no idea the American Revolution had helped inspire what the Boers did:

Canada had a bigger role in the Boer War than most people appreciate – in London, Ontario there is a statue in the main park downtown (Victoria Park) commemorating the Royal Canadian Regiment and the other units that served in South Africe

Thanks. I did not realize that the Canadian War Museum had updated their web site/exhibitions.

Two Boer republics at that point, yes – though the ever expansionist and aggressive Transvaal had actually tried to invade the Orange Free State a generation earlier. The Transvaal had initially been a whole patchwork of mini-republics, but years of on-again-off-again wars against one another saw them amalgamated into one. A pretty turbulent and unruly place, all told.

Other mini-republics were then established as a fig leaf to justify land grabs against Zululand, Swaziland, Bechuanaland etc… these would be established, then miraculously incorporated into the Transvaal a year or two later as it expanded in every direction in the 1880s and 1890s.

Kruger's dream in 1899 was to capture the Cape Colony from the British and set it up as a 'Third Republic' in some sort of 'Afrikaans Empire stretching from the Zambesi to the Cape'. Didn't work out so well for him.

Interestingly, the Canadian town of 'New Berlin' was renamed 'Kitchener' during the Great War.

This guy's blog is always worth a look:
