Hackers obtained the Social Security numbers of more than 145 million Americans. Paid political chaos monkeys allegedly harvested data from at least 87 million Facebook profiles in an effort to influence the 2016 U.S. election, the Brexit vote, and possibly more. In a practice that could easily become discriminatory, police departments are mining social media profiles in the name of public safety. These stories are all connected by a common denominator: data. Which is why one should put out as much disinformation and obfuscation about oneself on the internet as possible in order to create a false data profile and throw off such analysis… ;-) |

Sometimes their data works against them. I watch TV shows on Netflix, read books and drive a car favored by people who tend to have political opinions different from my own. In addition, I work in a field where most of my colleagues have political opinions very different from mine. Given these factors, I often receive political solicitations from candidates who hold views very different from mine. |

I once sat in on a meeting with the trust and safety board of a major internet company. They showed us how they could track what, where and how an individual spent their day based upon the apps on their phone and the signals from towers and wifi hotspots. They also how signal leakage could provide data even when the phone was off. |
