There are many options to store and transport your minis out there. Being frugal, I have opted to go with metal tool boxes and magnets. How about you? Article at… link

Oh sure. I've also put the magnets on the tool box floors and gone with metal bases. It's easier but I do prefer magnets on the minis. GZG has a miniature 'Wargamer in anorak, with books and toolbox of figure' just to check all the cliches |

I use to use a couple of big cantilever ones, but as I got older, they became too heavy to lug any distance, particularly upstairs. I'm replacing them with plastic. |

I base on steel and use cardboard boxes lined with sheet magnet. Boxes are 12x18 and come in various depths. In many cases I get 2 layers of troops in one box.

These other ideas are also fantastic. Extra Crispy, thanks for sharing the picture. I often wonder if I did it the wrong way around and should have used washers and done as you have. Keep the comments coming! |

I use plastic Really Useful Boxes with magnetised sheet and put metal paper on my bases for massed armies. I still have a couple of the cantilever metal tool boxes which are pretty heavy given their own weight plus the amount of metal in them. |

Mark where do you get your boxes from? |

I used metal tool boxes years ago, it's a great ready made solution. Now, I use plastic artists cases for small scale figures, and larger plastic bins for 28mm figs. I put sheet metal in the bins. It's very cheap at hardware stores, but you'll need a tool called tin snips (heavy duty sheers for cutting metal) to trim the sheets to fit. The sheet metal is secured to the plastic with simple double-sided tape. I prefer this over metal tool boxes for three reasons: 1. Less weight. 2. More storage capacity. The plastic bins are often pretty shallow, you can stack up 4 or 5 of them in the same space a two or three level tool box. 3. Less tempting for thieves. Thieves target tool boxes (thinking they are full of tools!) They are less interested in plastic bins for art supplies. For individual 28mm figures, I base in steel washers and line the bins with sheet magnet. |

Grinding and filing metal produces metal filings. It's a work thing. Ferrous metal filings collect on magnets and must be cleaned off. If basing on magnets, cleaning the magnet risks damaging the figure. I put the magnetic sheets in the bottom of the box where it is easy to wipe out, and base (and ballast) the figs on steel. for boxes try Uline link link |

Jacob, First off, we live very close together and you game at my local hobby store. Secondly, here is my solution, which I'll say I prefer to yours. 1) There are 25mm diameter fender washers sold at Canadian Tire which are steel and attach to magnets easily. Use them for your basing. 2) Forget the craft magnets. They do not have sufficient magnetic power. I prefer heavy rolls of industrial magnetic sheeting from Job Master magnets. Or buy the heavy duty sheets from Litko. 3) Then go to any Zehrs that has a Post Office. Buy some of the Canada post shipping boxes. They come in various shapes and sizes. The local UPS store also sells shipping boxes but the Canada Post ones are slightly better. 4) Then line the bottom of the box with the magnetic sheeting like Extra Crispy and Ivan indicate. I even make 2 tiered boxes with two levels to carry twice as many figures. The tallest boxes can transport 28mm Knights with spears/lances held upright. Try it, much lighter than metal boxes. The only thing that can destroy them is leaving them out in the rain. Plastic bins are of variable quality. Some do not have flat bottoms which is a hassle. The Really Useful Boxes have totally flat bottoms. But they are a bit more expensive. Staples carries them. The part I don't like about the RUB is the handles, as they sometimes release. Hope that helps and I hope we catch up with each other. |

Bowman, thanks so much. I am going to give that a try! |
