Which range of miniature figures do you consider to be the most complete in its class ?

wrgmr131 May 2018 11:10 a.m. PST

Calpe Prussians.

Winston Smith31 May 2018 11:34 a.m. PST

How boring would that be?
I pride myself on the variety of manufacturers in my various armies.

Let's say that some manufacturer could strive to have an AWI range that's "100% Complete"?
What am I to do then? Scrap everything I own that is not made by them?

Not to be misunderstood here. I salute each and every new manufacturer to release more AWI figures, and I'll probably buy a Regiment or three off them.
But "Complete"? Irrelevant, at least to me.

Winston Smith31 May 2018 11:43 a.m. PST

Just as an example.
I just read about the extremes a gamer went to just to get an approximation of the Belzunce Dragoons, 30 of which served at Savannah with the French.
A "complete" range would have to include them. As well as du Cap, Martinique, French naval artillerists on land, mounted dismounted Brunswick Dragoons, mounted jaegers, Washington crossing the Delaware, Early War militia made Continentals with Grenadier caps…

It'll never happen, and I'm not losing any sleep over it.
I of course have "favorite" AWI ranges, but I never imagine that any of them will ever be "Complete".

Speaking of the AWI, Peter Pig's range is quite comprehensive.

Winston Smith31 May 2018 1:20 p.m. PST

Of course my hypothetical "complete" range would also include Spanish, every single troop type.

The overall winner is GHQ, in multiple lines, decade after decade. Nobody else comes close.

If you want to talk 10mm and up, then you will have more of a contest.

Knuckleduster War of 1812.

I would have to agree with Winston Smith – building your collection from multiple sources is part of the fun/frustration of wargaming. If those figures are slightly incompatible in terms of size, so much the better!

But to answer your original question, I would say that SHQ's 20mm WW2 ranges are pretty darn comprehensive.

We've got nearly 200 codes in our Spanish Civil War range, so that's pretty comprehensive. We could do with more armoured trucks for it though…

And just for Winston, our AWI is 89 codes comprising about 400 figures now.

Eureka's range of Tupi warriors. I keep trying to think of what can be added, but I keep coming up short.

Did Calpe ever release Prussian Kuirassiers?

Winston Smith31 May 2018 5:49 p.m. PST

Peter Pig's WWII Soviet rang is pretty comprehensive.

Nic Robson31 May 2018 7:24 p.m. PST

Sadly we didn't make any villagers for our Tupi :(
I have been asked for them, and it was a 'no sale' as I wasn't prepared to add civilians.

Interesting question

As noted Peter Pig has some very, very complete ranges

The Perry French Napoleonic range seems pretty complete to me (200 plus offerings)

Eureka Miniatures' line of footballers.

You can field a classic or modern team, with refs, goals, and even a streaker.

I think you have to supply your own rioting civilians, though, so maybe not quite complete.

Yet they don't have chasseurs a cheval in habit, the most common uniform for the most common French cavalry (together with dragoons)

'ever try gaming in a GW store? Seriously, knew a soldier with a complete army of Mk.6 beakies. He went overseas for three years. When he rotated back stateside some young kid manager at the local GW store told him that he couldn't game with non GW figures.
