I imagine most people will answer "Daleks" and "Cybermen." Those are pretty cool, I grant, but my favorite is the Rutans. I like several things about them. First off, they are mentioned (in "The Sontaran Experiment" and, IIRC, "Time Warrior") before they ever actually appear in the series, giving them a bit of history, and a slight anticipation factor. Second, when they do show up, they are not the typical Dr. Who "evil humans in rubber suits" aliens. The amoeba thing is a kind of a neat departure. Third, they are losing the war with the Sontarans, which, somehow, gives them character, and the ability to make an interesting plot device for future stories. There was a post-TV series novel in which the Doctor actually goes to their homeworld to negotiate with them, saying that they are the only thing stopping the Sontarans from conquering the galaxy. Fourth, shape-shifters are a guilty pleasure of mine. |

My favorite was from the "Key to Time" 6-part story—it was an old grizzled warrior that had fought across the galaxy in one campaign after another, and he had a young sidekick/second-in-command;cant remember the names, though—anyone know which characters I am referring to?? Davros was pretty scary ,too! MD |

thedrake – If you flip the postions of the two warriors, it might be the Graf vinDecay (that's probably spelled wrong) and his second-in-command. The Graf was younger (dark hair and a mustache) and the other fellow was older. The Graf had a personal bodyguard (his "Lavidian Invincibles" or something like that) who wore cloaks and barrel helms. He was also just a *little* touched – but a great villain nonetheless. The episode was "The Ribos Operation". I'm predictable – my immediate thought was "Cybermen" :) |

Oh, it's got to be the Slitheens – they made a big impression. Every time I see the line-up on the front benches of the House of Commons, I remember them

The inimitable Mr. Bill Armintrout
LOL! Just kidding! I think the Master has to be my fave with the Daleks a close second, and them maybe a tie with the Cybermen and Sontarans. Admit it! I had you going, not to mention Bill is the "Master" around these parts

The Master was the best opponent (especially Roger Delgado's incarnation), followed by (in no particular order) the Autons, Cybermen, Robots of Death, and the Spiders of Metebelis 3. There was also the deadly android in The 5 Doctors, the one that cut the Cybermen to pieces, can't remember what that was called but it was certainly a surprise. |

The Daleks from Big Finish's audio series "Dalek Empire" Hours of Dalek stories with no timelords in sight. From Doctor Who proper, The Master. |
| DrWhom | 11 Jul 2005 6:04 p.m. PST |
Sutekh from "Pyramids of Mars". Absolutely terrifying and barely moved the whole time. "Evil? Your evil is my good. I am Sutekh the Detroyer. Where I walk I leave only dust and darkness. I find that good." (Sounds kind of weak when written out, but the delivery was fantastic.) Magnus Greel from "The Talons of Weng-Chiang". Made a great Victorian villian even if he was a fugitive from the 30th century (or something). |

I also liked the actor that played the Jaggeroth(?) in one of the Tom Baker series;same actor that was the Imperial General leading the attack on the rebels at Hoth in "Empire Strikes Back." MD |

Scaroth the Jaggaroth was kind of cool, especially his ship. I rather liked the Haemovores as well. Bit of Nordic vampire action! I've always got a soft spot for that giant bubblewrap plant that Tom Baker fought. More conventionally, the Special Weapon Dalek. |

I don't care how many times this thread comes up, I'm still voting Zygon. C'mon, they're covered in suction cups, you can see the zippers, and they use a sock puppet to terrorize London. What's not to love? Rich |

Does anyone recall which episode of Doctor Who (from the Pertwee or T. Baker years, I think) used what was pretty clearly an onion roll for a spaceship? |
| joekano | 13 Jul 2005 8:27 a.m. PST |
1960's cybermen all the way. @ Huscarle – the robot in 5 Doctors who took out the Cybermen was a Raston Warrior Robot. |
| Covert Walrus | 14 Jul 2005 1:40 a.m. PST |
Daleks, Sea Devils ( Cause they look like tuataras), and Autons. Now Autons are scary . . . the ultimate stealth troopers. |
| Fortean2 | 14 Jul 2005 9:38 a.m. PST |
I could say Daleks or Cybermen as well, Sontarans are pretty cool too, but for a good second-stringer I've always like the Zygons for some reason. I can't wait to see how the 10th Doctor meets the Cybermen though. |

Do those bloody stone angels from "Blink" (yes, yes, it's the new series, I'm a heretic I know) count? Scared the crap out of me. If they don't count, then Sontarans. They kick ass for a living and as a living, what's not to like. |
| Thieses | 31 Aug 2009 1:26 p.m. PST |
I was always a fan of the Morpoton Brain Creatures from Keys of Marinus. They looked like very cheesy bug eyed monsters. Also I have always liked the ice warriors. I would like to see a modern design on them. here is one "colorized" link picture |
| Covert Walrus | 31 Aug 2009 2:05 p.m. PST |
I'd support the Stone Angels from "Blink", Thomas – And frnakly, the new series Sontarans have come up in my estimation; They finally seem to *be* the brilliant startegists and tacticians they have always supposed to have been in the recent revival, and have a real understanding of military operations. Before, they just seemed to be 'Mister Nazi Potato Head'. |
