I imagine most people will answer "Daleks" and "Cybermen."

Those are pretty cool, I grant, but my favorite is the Rutans. I like several things about them.

First off, they are mentioned (in "The Sontaran Experiment" and, IIRC, "Time Warrior") before they ever actually appear in the series, giving them a bit of history, and a slight anticipation factor.

Second, when they do show up, they are not the typical Dr. Who "evil humans in rubber suits" aliens. The amoeba thing is a kind of a neat departure.

Third, they are losing the war with the Sontarans, which, somehow, gives them character, and the ability to make an interesting plot device for future stories. There was a post-TV series novel in which the Doctor actually goes to their homeworld to negotiate with them, saying that they are the only thing stopping the Sontarans from conquering the galaxy.

Fourth, shape-shifters are a guilty pleasure of mine.

My favorite was from the "Key to Time" 6-part story—it was an old grizzled warrior that had fought across the galaxy in one campaign after another, and he had a young sidekick/second-in-command;cant remember the names, though—anyone know which characters I am referring to??

Davros was pretty scary ,too!

The Master.

Say No More

Techromancer11 Jul 2005 2:39 p.m. PST

thedrake – If you flip the postions of the two warriors, it might be the Graf vinDecay (that's probably spelled wrong) and his second-in-command. The Graf was younger (dark hair and a mustache) and the other fellow was older. The Graf had a personal bodyguard (his "Lavidian Invincibles" or something like that) who wore cloaks and barrel helms. He was also just a *little* touched – but a great villain nonetheless. The episode was "The Ribos Operation".

I'm predictable – my immediate thought was "Cybermen" :)

Sue Kes11 Jul 2005 2:54 p.m. PST

Oh, it's got to be the Slitheens – they made a big impression.

Every time I see the line-up on the front benches of the House of Commons, I remember them …… and sBleeped text.

Sue Kes11 Jul 2005 2:56 p.m. PST

Er…. bleeped? Why? That's a perfectly proper word for laugh/chortle/express covert amusement/

And I DON'T use offensive language in my posts!!

stumer11 Jul 2005 3:02 p.m. PST

The inimitable Mr. Bill Armintrout…

LOL!

Just kidding! I think the Master has to be my fave with the Daleks a close second, and them maybe a tie with the Cybermen and Sontarans.

Admit it! I had you going, not to mention Bill is the "Master" around these parts…

Karnophage speaks the truest words ever spoken

Mocaiv11 Jul 2005 3:11 p.m. PST

Ice Warriors

Sea Devils

Those other dudes with squashed heads under pudding basin helmets…

er, thinking back to the Pertwee days…oh my, twas a long time ago…

Huscarle11 Jul 2005 3:15 p.m. PST

The Master was the best opponent (especially Roger Delgado's incarnation), followed by (in no particular order) the Autons, Cybermen, Robots of Death, and the Spiders of Metebelis 3. There was also the deadly android in The 5 Doctors, the one that cut the Cybermen to pieces, can't remember what that was called but it was certainly a surprise.

Huscarle "…and the Spiders of Metebelis 3…"

Must… commit… suicide… with… dull… butterknife…

Zygons, Krynoid, Nucleus of the Swarm, anything Tom Baker-era and vaguely Lovecraftian….
Best of all….Kroll, erm Cthulhu,

TECHROMANCER,

Thats it!! Thanks for filling in the gap in my memory.

Broadsword11 Jul 2005 4:13 p.m. PST

Nope. I thought of Sontarians.

fujiking11 Jul 2005 4:53 p.m. PST

Movellans…looked like angels but were just as evil as the Daleks.

1905Adventure11 Jul 2005 5:48 p.m. PST

The Daleks from Big Finish's audio series "Dalek Empire" Hours of Dalek stories with no timelords in sight.

From Doctor Who proper, The Master.

DrWhom11 Jul 2005 6:04 p.m. PST

Sutekh from "Pyramids of Mars". Absolutely terrifying and barely moved the whole time. "Evil? Your evil is my good. I am Sutekh the Detroyer. Where I walk I leave only dust and darkness. I find that good." (Sounds kind of weak when written out, but the delivery was fantastic.)

Magnus Greel from "The Talons of Weng-Chiang". Made a great Victorian villian even if he was a fugitive from the 30th century (or something).

thedrake11 Jul 2005 6:23 p.m. PST

I also liked the actor that played the Jaggeroth(?) in one of the Tom Baker series;same actor that was the Imperial General leading the attack on the rebels at Hoth in "Empire Strikes Back."

sontarans

mrwigglesworth11 Jul 2005 7:37 p.m. PST

The wirrin from the ark in space!

The big e11 Jul 2005 8:12 p.m. PST

definitely the Movellans.

Barks111 Jul 2005 11:45 p.m. PST

Scaroth the Jaggaroth was kind of cool, especially his ship.

I rather liked the Haemovores as well. Bit of Nordic vampire action!

I've always got a soft spot for that giant bubblewrap plant that Tom Baker fought.

More conventionally, the Special Weapon Dalek.

Alxbates12 Jul 2005 12:08 a.m. PST

Gotta agree with Chronoglide –

"anything Tom Baker-era and vaguely Lovecraftian…"

Tshannon12 Jul 2005 2:34 a.m. PST

Daleks

Andrew May112 Jul 2005 2:52 a.m. PST

Those geezers with the big rubber heads and maniacal smiles. They gave me nightmares…

Tshannon12 Jul 2005 4:20 a.m. PST

Exterminate! Exterminate!

C'mon.

Daleks.

Neotacha12 Jul 2005 6:00 a.m. PST

Scaroth or the Master (for a repeating villain).

Tony Aguilar12 Jul 2005 6:57 a.m. PST

Only saw about two episodes (couldn't follow it)…but I liked the Dalek leader (Davros?) in a wheelchair!

Scurvy12 Jul 2005 7:12 a.m. PST

the gundam robots were pretty cool but sign me up for a dalek man. Gotta love the pepper pots from skaro.

Hundvig Fezian12 Jul 2005 7:58 a.m. PST

I don't care how many times this thread comes up, I'm still voting Zygon.

C'mon, they're covered in suction cups, you can see the zippers, and they use a sock puppet to terrorize London. What's not to love?

Rich

Neotacha12 Jul 2005 8:40 a.m. PST

Does anyone recall which episode of Doctor Who (from the Pertwee or T. Baker years, I think) used what was pretty clearly an onion roll for a spaceship?

joekano13 Jul 2005 8:27 a.m. PST

1960's cybermen all the way. @ Huscarle – the robot in 5 Doctors who took out the Cybermen was a Raston Warrior Robot.

Covert Walrus14 Jul 2005 1:40 a.m. PST

Daleks, Sea Devils ( Cause they look like tuataras), and Autons.

Now Autons are scary . . . the ultimate stealth troopers.

Fortean214 Jul 2005 9:38 a.m. PST

I could say Daleks or Cybermen as well, Sontarans are pretty cool too, but for a good second-stringer I've always like the Zygons for some reason.

I can't wait to see how the 10th Doctor meets the Cybermen though.

rodgeydodge31 Aug 2009 4:43 a.m. PST

Skeletonized Master from The Deadly Assassin.

"Predictable as ever Doctor…"

Sutekh and Morbiussssss.

Captain Apathy31 Aug 2009 8:45 a.m. PST

Wow, so many to choose from. I would have to say my top three are the Robots of Death, the Zygons and the Robot Mummies from Pyramids of Mars. So many great bad guys though…

Thomas Nissvik31 Aug 2009 1:02 p.m. PST

Do those bloody stone angels from "Blink" (yes, yes, it's the new series, I'm a heretic I know) count? Scared the crap out of me. If they don't count, then Sontarans. They kick ass for a living and as a living, what's not to like.

Thieses31 Aug 2009 1:26 p.m. PST

I was always a fan of the Morpoton Brain Creatures from Keys of Marinus. They looked like very cheesy bug eyed monsters. Also I have always liked the ice warriors. I would like to see a modern design on them.

here is one "colorized"

Covert Walrus31 Aug 2009 2:05 p.m. PST

I'd support the Stone Angels from "Blink", Thomas – And frnakly, the new series Sontarans have come up in my estimation; They finally seem to *be* the brilliant startegists and tacticians they have always supposed to have been in the recent revival, and have a real understanding of military operations. Before, they just seemed to be 'Mister Nazi Potato Head'.
