Whether OD&D, BECMI, AD&D 1e, or 2e, which published adventure module wins out as The Best? We're talking the folded, stapled beauties with the card stock cover, so no 3-5e WotC/Paizo stuff (even if they're great, they're not classic). Yes, third party stuff (like Judges Guild) counts. The standard should lean more towards the way it plays over production values. My nominees, in no particular order: In Search of the Unknown White Plume Mountain Pharoah (Desert of Desolation series) Ravenloft (the original module) Expedition to the Barrier Peaks G1-G3 Against the Giants List yours! |

I was always partial to Palace of the Silver princess. Intro DMing tips, multiple ways to complete the quest, and a nice mix of encounter types made it an ideal first adventure. |

My favorite – I played at a con – but dont believe it was ever published in final form – was The Penitentiary by Martian Game Modules (Martian Metals) – Would love to see it again if someone has a copy or a draft of it My top 5 D&D Expedition to the Barrier Peaks The Temple of Elemental Evil Caverns of Thracia Beyond the Crystal Cave The Lost City |

S2 White Plume Mountain – one of my first, a character killer C2 The Ghost Tower of Inverness – only read this one but looked interesting A1 Slave Pits of the Undercity – great mid level, also liked A2,3,4 I didn't care much for the Gygax modules G and D series; seemed all hack-n-slash. B1 In Search of the Unknown was my first module of a long 3 year campaign with the same character. Good intro for low level but kind of dry. |

Most fun i had was an adventure from Dragon magazine. But it is not a module. Called Jacob's Well. My DM ran it with just my character when the other 3 were out for 3 weeks. He ran it right and man was it spooky and intriguing. |

I hadn't considered Dragon mag "modules." I loved the early "Chapel of Silence" module from #50, and even ran it as a 5e adventure last year for my library teens group. I modified the somewhat random (and over powered) vampire to a purposeful wight with a backstory as a traitor behind the curse on the chapel. Loved watching the teens deal with having to be absolutely silent when the curse of the chapel fell upon them (particularly one overly-talkative chatterbox…a librarian's sweet revenge. ) But of course, they loved it too. Never did any of the others, though I liked the premise of "Beyond the Gate" (anonymously referenced in the current edition DMG!), and think "The Sword of Justice" one had a decent twist on a light mystery adventure. So we'll open the bidding to classic era Dragon adventures, but not Dungeon (that would be too many!) |

JG's City-State of the Invincible Overlord, and JG's Tarantis (another city-state module). Ran campaigns based out of these two city-states, for years. Fantastic maps, so much material, so many NPC's (all named!), truly wonderful material for the DM, and the players. Great stuff! After that, I gotta say, N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God. I have run this module around four times… Every time is totally different. With new players, it is superb: loads of role-playing as they try to figure out what is happening in the village; then a dungeon crawl through the village's temple, followed by a short trek across the wilderness into a swamp; and the finale, a two-level, classic dungeon crawl to battle a Naga, posing as a "god". To me, this is one of the very best modules because it requires different modes, and aspects, of play. Great fun, always. Cheers! |

Shrine of the Kuo-Toa I forgot about this one. It was great as a lean-in to Cthulu adventures. |

I'm partial to Ravenloft before it became a Campaign setting. The original module is terrific. The Keep on the Borderlands is a classic, too…not much in the way of plot as written, but a good way to level grind early on. I recently re-read Tomb of Horrors, or, as it is better known, "Gary Gygax kills your whole party." Seriously: was there anyone who ever survived Tomb of Horrors who didn't read it beforehand? Save or die, dude! I also remember enjoying X-2, Castle Amber; but aside from the House of Usher similarities, I don't remember much about it. |

KotB is by far the best beginning module… Second is the U1-3 series.. Sinister Secret of Saltmarsch and its successors… Then in third place would be the L-1&2 series… But kudos to the Castle Amber reference…. Madcam. |
