And for Part Two: What is the smallest scale at which you can distinguish all the troop types you use without having to use artificial aids like number of formation of castings on the stand, or actual marking of the stand? And does it vary with era? For me, I'm OK with 5mm from ancients through horse and musket, but when I get to the World Wars, at 5mm I have to start putting symbols on the stands to sort out MGs, mortars and AT guns. At 15mm, I'm OK. |

15mm for most everything. I sometimes have trouble telling who has the BAR in 28mm. |

All we did was 6mm. And generally it was not a problem ID'g units, types, etc. And with we all pretty much painting in Tac/camo colors. If your opponent(s) does not see some of your force … well … that is a +. However, if you are not paying attention, you may miss some of your elements as well … |

Vision corrected to 20/20. I can tell a water-cooled .30 from an air-colled .30 from a .50. I can identify tanks and aircraft, they're what I grew up with. I can tell a first-rate from a razee, but if you mix a bunch of little tin-cans together going fast, they better have different paint jobs or there is going to be an incident. (I love those Italians with their barber pole bows) Pattern recognition is a learned skill. I know a guy who was taught to, and could spot 6 telephone pole sized objects lying on the ground from twelve miles. (hint: SA-2's from 60,000 feet) Practice until you learn the game. We write whole chapters on spotting , and communicating information. There are books on intelligence gathering, and communications. It is the responsibility of a commander to use all the assets at his disposal. I listen to pregame briefings, and inspect the troops (nice paint job on your Hero/General (I've just identified your command structure and am prioritizing targets, chump)). I follow the action (pay attention). Without my glasses I probably can't tell facing colors. Why would I fail to wear them? You are discussing the first O in OODA. If I fail to do that, I fail to give my friends the best game. Mission Failure. |

We had playing cards with AFV and Aircraft outlines to practice ID'ing them as Friend or Foe … |
