OK, I noticed some of the models I ordered in their collection came with a bow in their left hand and a hammer in their right. link ( the ones left in the middle, MED120 What did they use the hammer for on the field of battle? Hammering stakes and/or pavises into the ground, or
..? Also, would these be all wooden hammers or wooden grips with a metal head ( for the painting )? Hope someone can help me out here, it's far better and easier to collect, paint and put together an army when you actually know what the fogs are doing ;-) Thanks. LoD |

Hammers were used for a variety of purposes including the stakes on the field option. Wooden handles would be the order of the day. Heads could be wood or metal although I suspect that wood be more more of a replacement option during a campaign. also very useful for melees since they don't need as much tutition to be used as a weapon comapred to a sword. |

I saw one mention of Burgundian archers carrying lead-headed mallets for the purpose of hammering in the stakes. Mallet is also a handy close combat weapon, especially against a well armoured knight. Griefbringer |

English longbow are noted as carrying " mauls " ( large hammers ) in France during the HYW. Very useful for bashing a fallen knights head in! |

That Perry blister of archers hammering in the stakes looks like great diorama material! Griefbringer |

"saw one mention of Burgundian archers carrying lead-headed mallets for the purpose of hammering in the stakes." "Mallet is also a handy close combat weapon, especially against a well armoured knight." "English longbow are noted as carrying " mauls " ( large hammers ) in France during the HYW. Very useful for bashing a fallen knights head in!" Indeed, it all comes back to me, I've heard that years ago
. Thanks for reviving my decaying memory, me and my pals really didn't know what to think of the hammer at the time. As I'm in de middle of collecting and painting up a Burgundian Army under Charles the Bold I'll make them English Longbowmen.. I know Perry Miniatures, but sice my Foundry's are true 25mm scale, aren't those Perry's a bit too big? |
