Nice, but I remember reading in more than one occasion that the floor of the forests in the past was usually a lot more open than what it is now, mainly because they were more populated, by people that used to collect the wood for fire and building, and by the animal fauna more numerous than in our times.
And this was true during the middle ages as it was in the ACW.
What do you think?

Deforestation definitely in Europe, less so in North America until the 19th century when the population rapidly expanded.

And not just forest floors but the woodland itself. Often it was the primary fuel source as well as a building material.
