So, Fantasy Flight is releasing a 2nd edition of X-Wing:

FFG must need more cash.

I'm not sure how to feel: more characterful differences between forces sounds good, but I'm pretty happy with how the current edition plays, and I basically just play at home anyway.

It's nice that the conversion kits will supposedly contain all the cards and such for each faction, but as a scum player, I'm not too fond of the prospect of buying two extra ones (at $49.95 USD each) just so I can use my dual faction stuff as their other faction (part of the draw of scum was that flexibility).

Additionally, splitting the sequel trilogy ships into fully formed factions is nice on paper, but basically makes the ships I have from the force awakens starter useless to me, as I have little interest in filling-out those factions.

Another concern is that if I choose to stick with the current edition, it may now become difficult to find the old versions of any ships I happen to want, although at the same time they might become cheaper to aquire, which would be nice.

It really will depend on if the new edition is "better" (and different) enough to warrant spending money on the new core set and conversion packs.

Not compelling for me. But then, I've got the ships I want (except an Alpha StarWing, which is on my buy list), and I'm not really motivated to expand my collection any further. Plus, the current rules play fine, and I don't really want "the Force" to be a huge factor. So, nope, not gonna buy this one.

I don't think it's a cash ploy. The runaway power creep with each successive wave of ships has really gotten completely out of hand. It is time to burn the current state of the rules to the ground and start again.

I'll wait and see if I like the new version.

The two prevailing theories (cash grab v power creep rules reset) are not mutually exclusive….

It can be both a good thing that is somewhat needed (to dial back the power creep and reset the rules), and being executed in the most cash grab means possible.

I started thinking that perhaps they were also running out of things to publish.

This might mean I buy a few more old expansions before they become 'collectors items' but, outside of that, this version will not be taken up by me.

I only play X-Wing occasionally as a 'filler' game in between (main interest) historical gaming sessions because it's a no brainer to set up quickly and dive straight in. It's also very good fun.

I already have over 50 ships to play with (mostly from the pre-Force Awakens expansions) so, for me, X-Wing is pretty much sorted. Only being able to buy non-compatible expansions in the future will kill it for me in the long run because I will not be 'V2 upgrading' anything.

Of course, it could work to my advantage as it might bring down the value of version 1 expansions being sold on ebay and might even lead to a glut as people dump to upgrade – who knows?

Got more than enough ships already. Don't see any need to buy into a new version.

Thomas O02 May 2018 8:06 a.m. PST

To much invested in Version 1 to change over.

Mutant Q02 May 2018 8:11 a.m. PST

Don't sell your ships. Ganesha is close to releasing Star Eagles.

$50.00 USD EACH for the conversion kits is f'n outrageous! Please don't try to justify this, just don't. So I guess spending $40.00 USD on a new 2nd Edition starter set isn't enough for FFG. Not enough you already spent $500.00 USD+ to get your squadrons and accessories all squared away over the past several years.

What a slap to the player base is how I see it. They could have tweaked the game in a way where all the classic cards and stats were still intact. Plus they change the dice so essentially you're starting from square one, none of 1st Edition's stuff is usable, but of course the ships are still usable. Can't exactly make an X-Wing or TIE-Fighter obsolete – the models don't change.

But I'm sure if FFG could have figured out a way to make all the 1st Edition ships unplayable they would have. Mess with the rules for the flight stands or bases or something that would have forced to rebase them, I'm surprised they didn't try to pull that off. There's no shame in these companies any more.

So to play 2nd Edition you have to shell out $190.00 USD? (to get three conversion kits and the starter box).

Seriously. $190.00 USD for CONVERSION UPGRADES? For boxes of CARDS and TOKENS? For pieces of cut-out card board?

All you should worry about is convincing your club or group of friends to continue playing 1st Edition. It's been a huge, successful game for six years. The rules are just fine. Nobody was screaming about unbalance or unplayable rules. 1st Edition rules are not in need of any upgrade.

This is an example of when a company can't leave well enough alone and needs to squeeze every drop of profit it can out of a product line.

This is just robbery on FFG's part.

Baranovich02 May 2018 11:49 a.m. PST

$190.00 USD for nothing but counters and tokens.

Isn't this the company and game that everybody was for so long praising as being a game that was "low barrier to entry"?

Pfffffffft.

DeRuyter03 May 2018 11:42 a.m. PST

+1 Baranovich.

I was excited about this until I saw the price of the conversion kits. I have a lot of x-wings so that's 3 kits just for them. Power creep may be a reason to put out a 2e rule set but to rework and reissue all the miniatures too!

I am just a casual player so my group will just continue with 1e and play mostly original trilogy scenarios. I thought Legion looked fun too but $90 USD for the core set and the miniatures are unpainted at that.

repaint03 May 2018 6:42 p.m. PST

what a joke.

Power creep? No, massive power bullying! I had fun until they started to introduce the ships and cards from Rogue one, then it all went down hill for me at this point.

Then we had this movie that was an insult in the face to people who grew up in the StarWars story, basically making void the (previous) SW universe.I haven't touch any of my toys ever since, not Armada, not X-Wing.

Ah ah, gave up in disgust :)

billthecat03 May 2018 6:52 p.m. PST

Star Eagles anyone?

Max Schnell06 May 2018 3:08 p.m. PST

I have est $500 USD usd invested and played my first game in a year. 2.0 will bring me back into the game.
