I was reading interesting article with some images for a computer game, but there was nice pics of different ships from various fleets, British, Russian, French, more. They have different paint schemes. I am wondering if fleets and/or nations had distinct paint schemes, and when they develeped, and what they were? Looks like Russia was olive green, for example. Italy of especialy interest, but French, Spain, Britain, Russia, Austria, Turkey…anyone in the mediterranean. Much Thanks! |

Most countries had their own schemes for their fleets which sometimes even varied between stations. Mal Wright is the guru – for the Great War his article here might be a good start: gwpda.org/naval/s1200000.htm |

You can also peruse the painting article on the Wartimes Journal website. link This is a good discussion of both peacetime and wartime color schemes for most of the major naval powers. It especially does a good job with the differences in the 1904 Russian schemes between the Baltic Fleet, the Pacific Fleet, and the Vladivostock squadron. Jim |

The Austro-Hungarian fleet used an olive drab color in the years up to, but not including, World War I. From photographs, the Italian fleet (or at least some part of it) used a very dark gray at some point. Regardless of prevailing practice elsewhere, virtually all nations used a predominantly white scheme for ships stationed in the tropics. |
