I guess my original post died in a bug. To continue my theme of armies for the Battle of Five Armies we move on to the men of Laketown. Now which miniatures to buy is easier. I am eying the Old Glory Rus line, as I always liked Laketown with an Eastern flare. Just to be different I guess. Now the real question is, how armored were the Spearmen of Laketown? In your opinion are we dealing with the basic shield and helmet type soldier.
Would the militia of Laketown be able to field a unit of armored warriors? Let me know what you think. |

After fleeing for their lives and moving to the middle of the lake, only the retainers of the Lord of Laketown would have armor, right? Slavs or Sarmatian infantry in lamellar (of metal or horn) would work. Or early Goths on foot. Horn lamellar would be light, when compared to metal, which would keep them from sinking like a rock in mud or shallow water:
I think the coffin-shaped Visigothic shields would work well for blocking wooden walkways between one neighborhood and the next in Laketown. Dan

Dan, Is this the shield you speak of?
Thanks |

That's the one. If they needed to, a small shield wall could effectively close off a wooden bridge or walkway, until reinforcements arrived by boat. At least that's what they would probably be training for, with their semi-aquatic living. Hunting waterfowl would mean a good number of the men would be naturally well trained in archery and in using net traps and canoes (and poles). Just like the early Venetian settlers*, they would have adapted their fighting style to the new environment. Plus they needed to use that new environment to maximize the fighting potential of the few men they had when they moved to the middle,of the lake. Dan * "the original population of Venice consisted of refugees from Roman cities near Venice such as Padua, Aquileia, Treviso, Altino and Concordia (modern Portogruaro) and from the undefended countryside, who were fleeing successive waves of Germanic and Hun invasions" link |

Look up Ohrid Lake (and other reconstructions of prehistoric lake villages) for some really neat and inspiring photos and paintings. Dan link

Louie, Are you going to do a blog covering your 15mm LotR adventure? |

To Frostie, I do not have a blog, or a webpage, or anything. I don't even have a Facebook account (The horror). I sometimes post here on TMP to share. Please realize I am very slow with all my projects and get distracted from time to time. I have been wanting to do a Middle Earth project for some time. I am starting with the Dwarf-Goblin war. That will expand to the Battle of five armies, and from there to the Battle of the Pelennor fields. We will see what happens. I have 2 units of Dwarfs done. thanks |

I kind of thought that the militia I did for my Kosciuszko Uprising line would work well as Men of Laketown. |

I guess I could include a picture: TMP link |
