Something with cool minis etc, but no 40k and not Warhammer What else is there? It could be historical, or sci-fi or whatever really as long as it isn't fantasy. Unless fantasy with no magic. |

Two Hour Wargames (5150) Shock Force Fast and Dirty Rules (FAD) Pretty much any rules set out there. What you're going to get here is a list of people's favorites. How many minis do you want on the table? Do you want vehicles? How much terrain do you want? How much control over your minis do you want? Do you want to play solo? |

For Commercial Sets with own miniature ranges: Cartoony SF = I'd say Mantic Deadzone/Warpath is your best bet. Then Warlord Games' Gates of Antares. For cyberpunk/manga I'd try Infinity. Or you can slot your existing figs into something like Fast and Dirty, In the Emperor's Name, or Rogue Stars. See Stryderg's questions and weigh them against some of these options. Good luck and let us know your choice. |

It could be historical, In that case, try Warlord's WWII miniature game Bolt Action or, if you like to combine WWII with "superscience" into pulpy fun, Konflikt '47 might be just for you. 40K is pretty much WWII in the 41st millennium anyway. |

I think Warpath is the closest to Warhammer 40000 in scale, scope, and even rules. It's getting so you can't tell who's copying who these days. A few other contenders would be The Ion Age in 15mm or 33mm (they aren't 28 and never were) Mutant Chronicles which I would generally say is 10000x better except for the resin. Damn I hate resin. Shock Force and FAD are both free on-line to the best of my knowledge. Grenadier's Killzone rules are available free on-line, Marc Copplestone's original Future Warriors are available from, Forlorn Hope and Mirlton, his newer work is available from North Star. I'm not sure if he gets paid from the first two and there's some conflict over who actually holds the rights. Oh well, really awesome line by the man who sculpted the very first GW Space Marine and a decent enough game for what it is. Anyhow, enough of my blatant biases let me suggest some parameters to consider to help us out. Factions: How many factions do you want? Kryomek is fun but there's really only two factions. Miniatures Range: How many variants? plastic, resin or metal? Vehicle kits? Look and feel. Rules: Abstract or Simulationist? Heroic and over the top or realistic and bloody? Rigid or flexible. Simple or complex? Free, cheap, or full colour hardback? Starter Set? Army boxes? Pre-painted or paint line? Just a few thoughts. |

And there's also Void for a great sci-fi game. |

VOID's a pretty good 'un, it's turn sequence is pretty much what you get when you combine Wh40K ca. 3rd with alternating activations (-:) But if you do want Wh40K but better/different, I'd go with Warpath as well. The forces will have a more familiar feel and it also works with even larger forces than VOID (tho that is pretty streamlined too). As a bonus, there are larger and smaller skirmish variants with essentially the same troops as well. Tho if you want to go with something completely different but good, there is of course my old hobby horse, Defiance: heros.netai.net/html/DVG.html With that, you can use any k00l minis you like with little resort to "counts as". |

Another 40K but not 40K would be Grimdark Future, from one page rules. There's a full battle and skirmish versions. And it's FREE! |

Infinity is a much-reduced number of models per side, with a lot more terrain. I like the rules and models, but I have a rule of thumb for Infinity terrain that I call 9+4+scatter: * First, divide the 4'x4' square table into a 3x3 grid (18" squares). * Place one large piece of terrain or a clump of smaller pieces into each square (9 in total). It's more interesting if you place the clumps no more than 3" apart so troops can jump from rooftop to rooftop. * Next, place 4 smaller pieces of terrain on the intersections of the grid to block Line of Sight at ground level. You can also use large buses or cars for this, if you're doing a city battle. * Finally, put enough scatter terrain that you can move 4" and get into the next piece of cover. 60-80 pieces. Don't forget to put stuff on the rooftops to provide cover, too! This sounds like a huge amount of terrain, but the scatter builds up pretty quick when you buy two of each civilian vehicle that is Designed for Infinity, then add a few planter boxes for trees, and finally add something like Jav98's Blade Runner parking meters from Shapeways. |
