Yeah … as noted 70% of those of draft age wouldn't qualify. Of course drilling a hole in your head may be considered a bit extreme IMO … for any reason. Of course I'm awaiting congress to act on the Gens & Adms suggestion, that since all MOSs in the military are or will be open to females. Then when females turn 18 they have to sign up for the draft too. Just like males. I doubt many in the gov't would want to risk their "little debutants" getting drafted and sent off to a war. Fortunately the draft ended in '72. But regardless all males still have to sign up when they turn 18. Just in the event there is need for a draft. Which I see highly unlikely. As I have said, before I'd rather serve with/lead/etc., someone who volunteered to be there. Not "forced" … the WWII mentality that would accept this no longer exists. For better or worse … I'm a big fan of when it comes to this sort of thing. Leave it up to the professionals … Well lead, well trained, well armed and supplied … Oh … and no holes in your head save for the ones you were born with. Call me crazy ?! |

The elimination of the draft has had many bad, bad consequences. Foremost among them is a lack of diversity economically, socially, and geographically in the military. The complete severance of our national leadership, whose children usually do not serve, from the use of the military. The creation of a military force that is largely cut off from the polity it serves except on national holidays and showcased sporting events. It has lessened any sense of obligation to country except in hyperbolic rhetoric by people who have never served. It has encouraged a lack of political concern by people that have no children serving, and it has increased the internal commitment in the military "to go along, get along" rather than honest internal critique that leads to solutions. The idea of a " Professional" standing army of any size was anathema to our founding fathers. The Constitution is a testament to that view. As for serving with volunteers rather than draftees ( or " volunteers" facing the draft) we have ample examples in history of the advantages of utilizing a pool that represents all of the intellectual, social, and demographic elements in a democratic nation, rather than relying on a force drawn largely from a disadvantaged group led by officers from a narrow generation spanning caste of professionals. And, oh yes, it deprives entire generations of training in health, cleanliness, care of clothes, physical fitness, a sense of community, and squaring their gig line! 😉 |

I would be all for the reinstatement of the draft, if there are no loopholes for silver spoon Birthers to use. Even National Service loopholes for non military fields would be too easy for the spoons to avoid the risks of combat. Noblesse oblige. |

Repiqueone … Hyperbole ? rather than relying on a force drawn largely from a disadvantaged group led by officers from a narrow generation spanning caste of professionals. I was one of those "disadvantaged groups" … I went thru ROTC on grants and loans. And as soon as I went on active duty my loans were paid off … And as far as the grants … 10+ years on active duty in 4 Infantry Bns, etc. Plus about a year in the USAR … I guess that equates to paying off my grants … |

"Bone spurs and a rich father is far more effective." "…bad, bad consequences. Foremost among them is a lack of diversity economically, socially, and geographically…" I can see how the experiences described in the second statement lead to the conclusion drawn in the first statement. |

"…bad, bad consequences. Foremost among them is a lack of diversity economically, socially, and geographically…" If you want that sort of mix … go to a college campus ! LOL ! I'm still sticking with my take on it – volunteers/professionals. Of course based on my background, I may be biased … ? |

Agreed ! Most of my instructors in ROTC and many senior officers and NCOs I was with on active duty had served in SE Asia. Sometimes multiple tours. They knew their "business" and I used some of those lessons, etc., thru out my time in the ARMY. Many times I repeat some of those comments, tactics, techniques, procedures, etc., here … And sometimes it does not go over very well. They were not academic, intellectuals generally and certainly no SJWs or very PC at all. But Very good at their "job". |
