A quite stunning military museum in the heart of Beijing. Don't be put off by the verbose name, the collection includes a lot of equipment from WWII and much that you won't find elsewhere, especially Japanese. Given the Chinese in the 1930s bought arms on the international market and then during WWII had weapons supplied by the western allies, there is a surprising mix of equipment, all very well displayed. I've posted a lot of pictures on my Tactical Painter blog but here's a few samples:

I nearly got there in 2016 when my wife and I went to Beijing. But she wasn't too happy about it so instead we went to the nearby Capital Museum. While an "Art" museum it has a stunning array of bronze age weapons. Interestingly as foreigners we were supposed to have booked a ticket online and supply our passports (difficult as the hotel had them). But the woman at the counter just glared at us and let us in! I need to go back. John |

PS: If you do visit the Capital Museum, buy a couple of portuguese tarts from the Wedome bakery around the corner and go down to the tea house in the basement when you have finished looking at the bronzes and the exquisite pottery. John |

I assume by Portuguese tarts you are referring to some sort of pastry based comestible, not a couple of ladies of easy virtue! :-) |

No problem, it's easy to find, just go to the ‘Military Museum' subway stop, where else? |

@Fred Cartwright: I believe that the Portuguese tarts to which you can refer can mostly be found in Macao. @the original poster: Thanks for posting those great pictures. |

If I recall correctly, there used to be a hall of reconstructed medieval siege weapons on the ground floor, and small arms and assorted ceramic mines on an upper floor. |

The upper floor galleries were not open the day I visited, so I've only seen the galleries with the big 20th century hardware. I have to return to Beijing next year so will visit again in the hope of seeing the rest. One note for those intending to visit. Admission is free, but ID is required. Chinese nationals were using their ID cards, I used my Australian drivers licence as photo ID and that was fine. I brought my passport as backup but it wasn't required. |
