I wonder if this is also the case elsewhere in the world: link link Dan |

Back when I was a kid stamp collector, I would order some stamps from one company and get others "on approval". Then a few other stamp companies from the same city would also send me stamps on approval. I paid for ones I wanted from the former and sent back what I didn't want. For the unsolicited ones, I kept them all. They threatened me, but my Dad who worked in the Post Office told me that since they were unsolicited….. They were crappy stamps anyway. |

Yes, once in 1978, I received a hardback book by Signal on World War Two. |

Well, that sure takes me back, when I also got a few stamps out of the blue. I stopped collecting stamps when I discovered girls, but I still kept my albums. I still had them until Hurricane Harvey came last year. I had coins too, but none were ever sent to me unsolicited. Dan |

Beware of some of the "free" stuff you receive. Sometimes I got checks in the mail. I threw them out (after reading the fine print.) Turns out if you endorsed them, you were agreeing to a contract (according to the fine print.) This decision was reinforced when a few weeks later some highpressure salesmen showed up wanting to know why I hadn't cashed the 10$ check, but they had another check just in case I'd "lost" the first one. I sent them packing…. :-) |

Some 50 or so years ago I used to frequently receive unsolicited mail. Most of it went in the trash, BUT if it included a return envelope upon which the postage would be paid by the sender of such mail, I'd slip in a couple pieces of hammered flat tire weight and mail it from another town. Of course, no return address. Nowadays of course it just goes in the trash or shredder. |

as long as you didn't "sign up for a club" ala Hamilton Mint or Bradford Exchange or the old by mail record clubs if you didn't order it you can keep it as an unsolicited gift with no need to pay for them just send back invoice stating thank you but did not order as Winston Smith stated |

As per Postal Regulations, if you receive an item in the mail you do not want, did not request, or order in any manner you can simply write "Refused" across the front of it and the Post Office will return the item to the Sender Postage Due! |

The post office won't return a bulk mailing. They' ll just chuck it as well. Bulk mail is just that. No one counts it. |

About 30 years ago my law office would get an unsolicited banker's box of printer/copy machine paper, with an over-priced invoice following a few days later. We kept the paper and filed the invoice in the circular file. "They" did this 2 or 3 more times, until they finally realized we weren't falling for the scam. They were obviously assuming some office assistant would assume someone else in the firm ordered it and just pay the invoice routinely. |
