TSATF allows you to field Zulu units (at a set ratio) armed with firearms. From grim experience, such units are a bit of a burden. Worse, history instructs that such units are not entirely accurate. Many Zulus carried a range of long arms, mostly ineffectively, but not exclusively against assegais, shields & other close combat weapons. Do you allow such units in your Zulu forces? |

I have mixed spear & firearm units. Yes not terribly effective but sometimes they do some hits. |

Some of the actions, such as Sihayo's Kraal and Mount Hlobane, need a significant proportion of Zulu firearm units. |

Out of 21 TSATF Zulu units in my army 18 are spear armed and 3 have rifles. I also have a 6 man mounted Zulu unit with rifles. As I recall, one of the Zulu chiefs looked favorably upon the western style of combat. |

I have 24 spear and 2 rifle units – but also have a half dozen individually based rifle stands that I use for long distance firing only – they cant close and have a small hit percentage |

I am in awe of how many units some of you have. The trouble with Colonial games is getting the rifle fire (especially that of natives like Dervishes and Zulus) to feel right. Years ago Howard Whitehouse came up with an interesting solution to this in his Science Versus Pluck rules: native riflery is made to cause more disruption to Imperial formations and morale than actual casualties; it was an elegant idea, well worth a look, especially as the rules are available these days as a inexpensive download. But then again, TSATF always give a good game just as it is. As regards the question, I rarely gave Zulus more that 6-7 rifles in a unit. |

My eleven Zulu units have 1 in 10 armed with firearms, enough to be a nuisance but not much else. I also have one small unit armed with old Muskets. |

10 % Zulu are carrying firearms in mine More of a nuisance than anything else |

The strange thing about the original version of TSATF was that once a unit got down to 2 or fewer rifle armed figures, they couldn't shoot. With the "new" D20 firing tables, now they can fire! A small victory for native sharpshooters, since they can never hit anything anyway. It's a really sad and unlucky British soldier who is actually hit by a Zulu rifleman. We don't have units of Zulu riflemen. We sprinkle 3 in a unit of 30. |

I have been slowly building up my armies and currently have a "demo" game set – two British half-units and six Zulu half-units, one of which has rifles. |
