I thought I knew the good and bad deed of most emperors, but I really dunno any more. Things are constantly being rewritten these days. What was a good thing yesterday is bad today and vice versa, and may or may not be the opposite tomorrow. So I stopped worrying about it. Or caring. Dan |

There is a constant re-evaluation of Roman history, but I'm tossing the history books out the window and sticking with Clavdivs as most underrated, after all, he had a great BBC TV series :) |

Claudius was certainly the most underrated BEFORE he took office …. |

There's re-evaluation in light of new evidence, and then there's re-interpretation just for its own sake. Dan |

I think it depends on what criteria you're looking at. Expansion and military? Then Augustus and Trajan and some others are heroes. Legitimacy and killing lots of folks? All the sudden Augustus is an opportunist who clawed his way to power by having many murdered. Nero is seen as incompetent but then actually did some good things and didn't kill nearly as many as Augustus, Tiberius, and Claudius. So this is a really subjective question. I'd probably go with someone who's not well-known but stabilized the Empire like Aurelian. |

Julian! Known mostly for being a pagan apostate, he combined military and administrative brilliance before and during his brief reign. |

I'll take the Architect, the guy who built that funny round square building. |

Oldbob: The one with the mismatched front porch? JK, I love that place – amazed every time I've entered. My son and I looked carefully around the side and there are spaces between the marble slabs where you can see the brick behind. I know that's n big deal, really, but it was cool to see. Besides, he was the first in 100's of years to sport a beard and make it cool. So good choice! |
