Since I started into Bolt Action a question has been running around in my head regarding Squads per Army. Recently I acquired(from several people)2 Japanese Forces,a US Marine Army, some other assorted US troops, about 100 Russians and some British. Now a good portion of these figures are based and painted while the remainder are not. My Japanese Forces I have at least 11 Squads while my US troops(mostly Marines)I have a similar number. Now I know that I can have different types of squads like regular, veteran, grenadier etc. But I ask you when you build an army or armies how many squads do you want/need for each army? And I would also add in the Konflikt 47 stuff as well since I'm getting some of the Weird War stuff as well. Now regarding my Japanese Army I think I have enough Infantry to cover almost anything I might want to build(in terms of historical forces)but I do need some more armor and guns as I have the minimum number for those. So I'm curious to know what you think. |

As many as you can reasonable use without bogging down the game. 2-3 squads per player is sufficient for a good game. |

X2 for 79th, but we do company-level games a lot of the time with 9-12 squads each side (or sections if you're Commonwealth), couple of MMgs, couple of mortars and the games rattle along well. |

We use roughly a platoon per player. Throw in vehicles / guns & it's fun for everyone. |

I think you need at least 4 infantry squads. A platoon of 3 squads plus at least one extra along with all the other goodies for a list such as an MG, tank, AT Gun. Whatever you like. Whenever a take 3, I always seem to be wanting for one more squad to maneuver. |

It depends on what kind of game is being played. A multi-player game with a small platoon per player is a lot different than one vs one with a large platoon per side. Mostly, I play the group games with 550 points per player; for me, that is two squads, a sniper, a small tank, and the officer. Expanding that to 750 or 1000 points is an extra squad, Veteran status, and another support element. |

Two plus some support works for me. |

Another vote for 3 squads as a basic force, though routinely I paint up 4 or 5 squads for scenarios etc, and then a variety of vehicles (usually armored cars up to medium tanks) or specialists such as snipers, mortars and so on. |

Roughly 75 to over 100 miniatures in each of my 8 armies (see other thread). Plus lots and lots of 1/48 tanks and vehicles of all types. 95% painted. |

To me it depends on weather you play points games or historic scenarios. In points games we usually use two or three infantry squads and the assorted support choices. In historic games we tend to need four or five squads and less support options. |

I can on;y advise for point game's as Soviets from experience, but I've seen this in other armies in points based is the following set up. 2 squads with rifles and an LMG then 1 squad (preferably tough fighters) with SMG. that's at 500 points. As you get more points your going to want to keep a 3/2 ratio at max. This gives you squads to provide pinning fire, and squads to assault. I'd also recommend making the squads regular over either inexperienced or veteran. |

For 1000 to 1250 points usually Four to Six Squads on Average. |

Tough fighters and SMG give the same bonus in melee….. |
