Terry I think you are laying it on a little too much. Yes it is the biggest miniature gaming show there is. There will be the latest sprinkle of card/3ft/10men games.
These sort of games are very popular for a whole variety of reasons.

BUT there will also be some historical games to see, probably some impressive/massive ones (7?). There will also be a couple (3 or 4 ?) of historical ones to join in on. Maybe historical stuff is becoming less popular these days at shows, but there are enough historical gamers left to keep the hobby ticking along.

Alfie Conn

Obviously the wargaming hobby is upsetting you – perhaps you should find a different hobby to sneer about

Alternatively, radical notion, don't come to Salute……

Alfie … you sound like a very happy and excited person about your part of the hobby. Hold on to that and enjoy the experience, ignore those who have mis-read your post.

For me it is all about linear historical lines with lace and flags and bright colours and smooth-bore ammunition, but I have been known to paint something sci-fi oriented, but that knowledge is not for public consumption.

Alfie, love your enthusiasm. For me Salute was at its best when I was still at school and indeed had to save up for months. A long time ago in a Kensington far far away. If you want to play in a historical game on Saturday, pop along to the Maidstone game (just by the entrance). We'll be running a rolling WW1 party game all day. Hope you enjoy your day.

To answer your question, I expect stuff that amazes me, bores me and confuses me. Sore feet probably too. I plan to buy little except some scenery and a few AB 20mm but probably will deviate from that intention within 20 minutes. Bring it on.

Have fun at Salute. The 3 times I have had the Privilege to go was well worth the time and effort. The best 8 hours in gaming period!!!

Thing I'm looking forward to the most?

Not putting on a game!

No getting up at 06:30 to load up and get to Excel. No prep, No standing on super hard concrete for a day. No talking myself to a croak only to be lumped in with uncommunicative, non super detailed terrain using, wastes of floor space every year in the annual post Salute hatefest.

Actually getting to see all the other games and trade stands I forgo every year to "enjoy" the above.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to quite a lot!

Annual post Salute hatefest sound like a fun filled time for all.

JimDuncanUK12 Apr 2018 9:41 a.m. PST

I don't take part in the Salute 'hatefest' but there are lots of reasons why I would not consider attending Salute.

It is an overnight stay to be able to enter in the morning and another overnight stay afterwards unless I leave as soon as I get there.

Two nights in a local hotel would blow my normal show budget.

I see all my regular traders at the dozen or so UK shows that I do attend where I don't have to queue or to shout to be heard.

I see plenty of the 'big' games elsewhere as most go on the circuit.

I do not intend to criticise the Salute organisers, they are a great bunch of lads, I've had a beer with one of two them at Crisis. It's probably a great show but just not achievable for me.

Have to go….

Don't want to go……

Have to go……..

If I wasn't helping one of the traders I wouldn't go within 100 miles of it……

The smaller shows are generally allot more pleasurable personally speaking……. I also think the whole thing is going to far SiFi and not sticking to its historical roots. At the end of the day I suppose we have to accept that it is the likes of a 30foot Forgeworld stand that pays for the venue……

Meeehhh!

Wackamole this is the PRE Salute hate fest….. The post Salute hate fest will be on Sunday…..lol

coopman12 Apr 2018 4:42 p.m. PST

Hope you all have an epic good time.

WKeyser13 Apr 2018 5:16 a.m. PST

I dont know I have been to Salute and it indeed is a great event, however, for me the best Miniature con is Historicon on the East Cost of the US. You start gaming on Wednesday and dont end until you drag yourself to the car on Sunday. And dealers that fill up 4 or 5 tennis courts of space. But as Alfie says there is room for all.

William

Historicon the best Miniature con, you must be mad. Held in a Mold infest hell hole in Lancaster. Have you every gone to any non HMGS Conventions? Go to Adepticon or Salute to see a really event and not the same old stuff at HC.

I've been as a punter before Excel and demonstrater at Excel, but tomorrow will mark just my second visit as a punter. I make a point of going now because -
1.Even after the £10.00 GBP admission,I can save a bundle on postage.
2. I get free travel courtesy of the London Mayor.

That being said, that floor is damn hard on the feet and the beer/food is extortionatly priced.

I will studiously ignore the 'Demo Games' – IMO they are nothing but vanity projects. Apart from picking up pre-orders I will try to get a couple of games of the WAT, Peter Pig or 7TV type. I also have a list so I will end the day happy, whacked out and much poorer.

Oh, and I will have a backpack …..

seneffe13 Apr 2018 1:59 p.m. PST

I'll certainly be there this year as I have been for most of the last 25 years.

I'm sure it's my problem- but I've honestly never seen a sci-fi or fantasy game at Salute or any other show which has caused me to break step and look twice- that stuff has simply never fired my imagination at all.

My wife- with the perspective of a historian and a brief (but irritatingly successful) period of historical gaming behind her, once gave me her opinion of sci-fi and fantasy when we were at another UK show years ago- 'life's too short to drink bad wine and it's way too short to be titting about with elves and dwarves and spacemen'.

I lack her Churchillian gift of expression but I buy her point. However- if elves and dwarves and spacemen do it for some folks- that's great- it's all gaming- but if space is an issue maybe also think about trying Chain of Command or Saga…..

'Alfie'- hope you have a great day!
