I am looking for a small hobby lathe to turn wood. Most of the stuff on eBay and Amazon looks like cheap cr***. Any recommendations?

Because I only needed to make 2 items, I actually got to convert my drill into an improvised lathe. I think I saw a recent video that someone else did. I'll see if I can find it. Dan EDIT Here's one: YouTube link |

Have you tried your friendly local Harbor Freight? link It's my go to proof of concept tool store. If it works, great! If it doesn't work I need something else i.e. a different type of tool. If it fails to do the job, then I need a better (more expensive) tool from some where else. A better search turns up better options link |

I am a big fan of Micro-Mark. They are not cheap however: link If you only want to lathe wood, you're in more comfortable territory: link Edit: slaps forehead: I see you say "to turn wood." |

A follow on to dampfpanzerwagon: I bought a Black & Decker portable work bench years ago. I used it as the work base and to hold my hand drill in place. From there is was just a matter to rig up something to hold the piece of wood being worked. link I was a Cub Scout leader and used this set-up once a year to work on about 50+ Pinewood Derby Cars with our kids. I don't know how often you may need to use a lathe, but for a small quantity or infrequent work, this may work out for you. |
