In honor of Count Schwerin's stunning victory over the Austrians at Mollwitz in 1741, I decided to dive in and order a bunch of Eureka's 18mm Prussians (enough for two regiments of infantry, one of fusiliers, and two regiments of hussars). Does anyone have any favorite regiments?? I'm thinking IR7 von Braunschweig-Bevern, RI 24 von Schwerin, IR35 Prinz Henrich von Preussen, HR5 von Ruesch, and 8R8 von Seydlitz. |

HR2 was the only Hussar regiment at Mollwitz. H8 wasn't raised until 1743. HR5 was raised in 1741 but I don't have a month. HR2 is probably the prettiest hussar regiment in the Prussian service, so I'd have gone for that but you bought hussars in mirlitons so they are out.
IR7 and IR24 are as good as any, I have 24 and it has a good strong green flag. IR35 wasn't at Mollwitz but was raised in 1740. Personally, outside the hussars, I have 2, 5 & 7, I think Prussian cavalry is pretty samey, as are most of the infantry. Though they all look good and generally fight well. I think IR59 is probably the most outstanding fusilier regiment for colour, but has a brown flag. They were converted into fusiliers (from pioneers) in 1758 so have a good double use – seen here building a pontoon bridge
Good luck with the painting. My collection link

Thanks, James! I should have commented that this army is not restricted to Mollwitz (merely its initial purchase wasinspired by the anniversary). I agree HR2 is beautiful, but I was hoping to get a reprieve from blue coats. |

Every Prussian army has to have the Black Hussars in it. You could paint your Dragoons in white coats that were used up to 1745. CR2 Prinz von Preussen has yellow breeches and kollet (coat) For infantry, I like IR1 Winterfeldt because it has the classic Prussian red facings and white breeches and waistcoat. And IR22 Prinz Moritz has red facings, but light cream colored breeches and waistcoat so it looks a little different from IR1. You could also paint IR23 and also paint grenadiers for both regiments because the Wedel Grenadier battalion had Grenadiers from both IR1 and IR23 |

@Fritz, I agree on the Black Hussars!. Did any Prussian dragoon regiments keep the white coat into the Seven Years War? My (limited) reading says no, but at least with the Austrians I know there were some holdover infantry regiments that kept colored waistcoats and/or breeches and flags for the early year or two of the Seven Years War. Also, your point is well-taken about starting out with some red-faced infantry before painting up regiments with pink, yellow, orange, or crimson facings… |
