1. To teach a history lesson.

2. To explore the possibilities of the situation.

3. To have fun. It's my turn this week!

4. To reenact and simulate as accurately as possible.

Mostly 3.

Well, I don't object to the adulation of the players, but that might be subsumed in 3.

1 and 2. I'd add five which I guess is similar to four--to be in control of the variables I think are important.

3- to have fun.

Also, I want to play the genre/ period I'm interested in with the rules that I like with the figures and terrain I put effort into producing. 😀

1-3 and the last half of 4.

Reenacting history is not the same thing as simulating history. In a stochastic simulation, you can get different outcomes for different runs. Not so much for reenactment.

I have had players comment about historical games I was running that based on the scenario and set-up the odds seem to be stacked against the force that actually won the battle. "Ummm … yeah. I was going for historical accuracy."

Superior tactics. Psyop. Perseverance in the face of "Holy Crap". Bad decisions and good luck. Lots of things influence battle outcomes.
