A completely uneducated question. Is the Trajan period considered early or late empire. It just seems to kind of be in the middle to me. But if you had to call it early or late which would it be?

Late early?

If you have to call it one or the other, then definitely early, without question.

I seem to remember calling it middle on a graduate school exam decades ago, and being poo-poo'ed for not calling it early.

Ok, late early it is!

It's usually "early" up to the death of Commodus or the accession of Severus, in the 190s – then Middle.

Early. Classic "Hollywood" Romans in lorica segmenta, auxiliaries in mail, German enemies who don't even wear shirts.

Trust me, it's early, l know.
