Russ, whatever happened to MagWeb? Do you still have access to Conflict magazine? Or any of the others for that matter?

Most of the issues of MWAN and The Courier, as well as HMG are available in pdf on Wargame Vault.

Thank you, Steve. I'll make use of that.

But the glory of the MagWeb was the search function. Losing the ability to log into MagWeb and search for, say "Napoleonic Scenarios" or "On to Richmond Scenarios" is one of the rare ways in which miniature wargaming has gone backward in recent years.

It's not the money cost of the PDF: it's the time lost searching for the article.

Agreed, indexes like this are very useful!

The long version is archived somewhere on TMP. The short version is our ISP was lightninged and flooded and servers were toasted back in 2008. The back-ups were in the same facility, and suffered a D-Elim as well, so while I have all the HTML magazine content, most of the previous two years or so of back office programming and accounting programming had not been saved.

I kept a limited version of MagWeb running for about a year at no cost to subscribers, but ultimately in May 2009 came the decision to shut it down and return money owed to subscribers (mostly $4.08 USD each, some $8.16 USD each) because we couldn't recover what we had done and the cost to start from scratch was not worth the return just as the Recession hit. The company, Coalition Web, Inc. was formally dissolved in 2010. I don't know who owns the magweb website now, but it isn't us.

And for those following recent news, Apple just announced in March it was buying the magazine service Texture, which bundles 200 major glossy magazines into one site for one low price (I think it was $10 USD per month). No acquisition price mentioned in the press release, but I imagine it will be a goodly sum.

MagWeb…another ahead-of-its-time pothole on the information superhighway. :)
