… Before Circumnavigating the World

"In 1600, two Dutch ships terrorized the Philippines. They then went on to become the fourth group of Europeans to circumnavigate the world.

This is recorded in "Events of the Philippine Islands," published in Mexico in 1609. Praised by historians, it describes the Philippines in not only the early years of Spanish occupation but also the bravery of its Spanish vice-governor in fighting off the Dutch… sort of.

In the 1500s, three expeditions (led by Ferdinand Magellan, Francis Drake, and Thomas Cavendish) had already circumnavigated the world….."

Wow, so they "terrorized" the Spanish and their "subjects" in the Philippines.

Isn't that what had been going on for over a century, back and forth, between all the European vessels and the vulnerable colonies* they came across overseas?

It was the SOP for war back then, wasn't it?

Why do they keep judging people of the past by the standards of today? Do they get aroused or some high out of it?

It shouldn't happen any longer, of course. That was then and this is now.

* And before that, it's what they did to each other's coastal cities back in Europe. All other seafaring people around the world did that since ancient times, including the Mindanao Muslims themselves, according to their own Medieval reports.

The Dutch were driven out of Formosa (Taiwan) in the 1600's by the Chineese. link

Interesting history this one(but the link will get you started.)

Personally been there a few times for a visit. Nice museum on the site with surviving relics.
