Is ad hoc division too complex/clunky/obscene for wargame rules … specifically, of the form of "1d6 per X figures"? |

I thought that an ad hoc division was several regiments put together as a battlefield expedient, but not forming part of the original order of battle. The mechanic that you're proposing sounds OK for wargame rules. I don't remember any game rules that use it. |

If I understood the OP then I might have an opinion. |

I doubt anyone would have a problem with the mechanic. The original Sword and Flame had a mechanic of "One hit per X Figures", and it lasted 20 years until they went to a "Roll 1d20 for each figure" mechanic". Being told "Roll 1d6 per 5 figures" shouldn't be too awful for most people. |

specifically, of the form of "1d6 per X figures"? I don't understand why that mechanic requires an ability to carry out mental division? |

I don't understand why that mechanic requires an ability to carry out mental division? You have 35 figures. The standard is "1d6 per 8 figures." How many dice can you roll? Answer:35/8=4.375 dice. Assuming you drop fractions, 4 dice. Thus, division is required to determine the dice to roll. |

Two and a Half Men on gaming (blackjack, in this case): Jake: What's the signal if you have to go to the bathroom? Charlie: There is no signal; you just get up and go to the bathroom. Unless you're on a hot streak, in which case you sit tight and wet yourself. Jake: You're kidding, right? Charlie: Hey, you're wearing a $50 USD pair of slacks and you got $600 USD on the table? Do the math. Jake: I have to do math and pee my pants? Two and a Hal Men, Smell the Umbrella Stand, Season 2, Episode 15 (Feb. 7, 2005), quoted in link |

The approach has been used before. It's a fairly simple application of division. You need the maths in case your figures are not grouped in the same numbers as the stat (f'r'ex – 1d6 per 5 figures for four rows of eight, or later three rows of eight and one row of six). Wetting yourself is optional. |

A Division from a military standpoint is a unit of @ 8000-15,000+ Troops. Depending on time period, whose military, type, etc. As has been noted … "Ad hoc" generally means a non-standard military organization and consists of various size elements. Usually at Bn, Rgt or Bde levels. Which elements/detachments are from various units from a number of other military organizations. And organized together under a certain Command, leader, etc. Also can be referred to as a Battle Group at Rgt or Bde level/size. Or at times a Kampf Gruppe at Bn thru Bde, generally. As already posted … [But once again, I think I gave the correct(?) answer to a question other than the one asked … DOH ! ] |
