"France built the 14.5-ton AMX-13 tank in the 1940s as a combat vehicle light enough to be air-transportable to support paratroopers. France produced and exported thousands of them, which saw action in several Cold War conflicts. They're still in service in a handful of countries, mostly in South America. The antiquated tanks could still see service for awhile longer. Reports suggest Peru is looking at converting 30 to 40 of its AMX-13s into self-propelled howitzers by swapping out their turrets for Soviet-era 122-millimeter D-30 howitzers. The new name would be the AMX-D30 Vulcano….!

Neat stuff, I always had an interest in what the WWII Germans did with the captured French equipment of 1930s vintage. This stuff always interested me. Kinda like the 50s & 60s Hot Rods in the US made out of converted "antiques". |

knowing D-30 for a couple of years, I wonder how this hybrid will perform. Probably they have changed the sights and might also rework gun hydraulics. To keep the aim you need the gun to be firmly fixed, and be able to quickly adjust the levels and elevation. Not sure how it will be done in this case. |

Nothing new here. The same chassis was used for a 155mm gun back in the days.
