Just showing off some painting progress on a unit of Guard Russian Cossacks I have been working on seemingly for forever…

OK, no one else has responded, so why not someone who knows next to nothing about this?

I researched these gents to escort the Tsar, in his carriage, some years back. Summerfield's book did help…

Well done. Lances painted red, much longer than usual, nice details on the headgear.

A suggestion. The horses. The odd white sock and, even more, a white facial blaze, on most, would just bring them to life.

Above all these look like a unit, which is great.

Wish we could see the occifer and the trumpeter, a bit better, in the photos……no, this is great work

Deadhead, Thanks for that! Will definitely be adding more details to the horses as this is just the intermediate stage. If I recall correctly, this was the only Cossack unit that was given a standard or Guidon. If you have run across an image of that I would be very grateful!

Perhaps as seen here in a re-enactment:

Will make sure to include close-up of the officer and trumpeter when done. They were custom assembled using the arms and headgear of different figures, but retaining the horse and body of the Der Kriegspieler figures to help maintain a unity of appearance.

Very nice!

How clever that these are conversions! Would love to know more about the parts used.

the banner. I simply cannot find my copy of Summerfield's book, but I know it is here somewhere!

This might help. As explained the large banner is marvellous but a fantasy creation. The lower image is right and I think the white one is what you are aiming for. The lance pennants I an not so sure about…….as you and the re enactors show, they did not use them

I also downloaded this some time ago but the link no longer works so no idea to whom this should be credited! Numbers 1 and 2 apply

Thanks Deadhead. The funny thing is that I hadn't gotten so far as to consider which lance pennons I would need to use – Very grateful I can skip that step!

Glad to know that banner #2 would be a reasonable presentation, as the white banner will be a nice contrast to all of the red.

The command figures were made by simply chopping off headgear and arms and replacing with those from some Newline Design cossacks I had. The Newline Designs are supposed to be 20mm, but in reality are a reasonable match to the Der Kriegspielers castings. The only reason I had to transplant the headgear, is that DK made Russian Cossacks wearing three different styles of hat, and I only had nine with the busby (and even those came from three different sources), so had to improvise. The hardest part was sculpting the cords, as the Newline Design cossacks had none.
