"Turned over by the hits of nine Japanese torpedoes during a raid on Pearl Harbor, the battleship Oklahoma (BB-37) is placed on a flat keel: at this moment the ship's hull is at an angle of 90 degrees to the surface. the initial position was completed only by June 1943.

The upper note on the photo informs that the photo was declassified almost 40 years later, on March 21, 1983."

It's a bit strange, since there are certainly pictures of Oklahoma's salvage operations in Morrison's 1947 vintage tome "The Rising Sun in the Pacific". But not from this angle, though, which leaves open the question of what it shows the other one's dont. Perhaps the complex system of winches?

Late declassification may have more to do with what is going on in the background of the picture than the salvage itself. For example, I have no idea what the odd buildings are nor what appears to be unusual aircraft outside the buildings.

Quite often sensitivity to families.

The winching system, IIRC, is clearly shown in pictures in Lord's "Day of Infamy". I suspect the late declassification is nothing more than typical bureaucratic inertia.
