What works best for 28mm American Revolution?

Would I be best served by buying a 28mm Warlord British and American Continental Army starter sets for Black Powder? Or would 28mm Sword and the Flame variant work? Or am I better off playing British Grenadier?

I'm curious. I'd always wanted to get into the period. I'm a little weak at choosing a decent set of rules, though.

I'm working on a fairly straightforward TSATF variant fir AWI. I call it Flames of Liberty. grin
It started as a joke, but when I ran a few Wyoming Massacre games, it looked like a very good idea.
I used the vanilla rules, but with a few mods, such as:
1. Only rifles use rifle range. For muskets, use carbines.
2. Continental troops and Hessians use Egyptian ratings. British are British.
3. Militia use Boer morale and Egyptian shooting.

It worked for quite a few games, but it needs further work. I'm cutting down musketry ranges and effect.

Use Sharp Practice to get you started. Nice sensible size games with lots of flavour. Won't take you too long to paint up the troops you need.

Hi Blake!

We use Muskets and Tomahawks. They work rather nicely.

I would recommend Black Powder Rules. Hope it helps.

As always, comments are appreciated.

Take care

Highly recommend "Loose Files and American Scramble". Good simple rules that are anything but simple. Capture the era very well and provide a fun game. They were the basis of British Grenadier. And they are fun! I have been playing them since they came out in 1985.

Here are the rules: link

Here are my interpretation of them: link

Any of your three alternatives will give you a good game. You could try al 3 or pick the one that most matches what you are looking for in a game. You can search past threads on this forum to get an idea of how each plays.

Rules are a tricky thing; what one person loves you consider the worst set of rules you have ever played.

Are you looking for skirmishes, big battles, 36 plus figure units?

What unit scale are you wanting to do? Do you want to do skirmish or battalion scale. If you want to do the bigger battles then battalion scale would work best. We use 'Sons of Liberty" which are battalion level and are free.

We have modified them to our taste. Good, easy set of rules.

I use the Fire and Fury AWI variant. You can download the QRF at their site. Since I play ACW with their Regt. rules. This was a simple transfer for me. At my age simple transfer is a highly regarded trait. H

I've played RF&F varient for AWI. I liked it. Played well.

Guns of Liberty.

I'll second Sharp Practice if you're looking for large skirmish gaming. Excellent rules and you don't need a lot of figures to get started. You can expand into cavalry and artillery as you get figures painted.

Hi Blake,
I would look into Guns of Liberty and also the free set from Alte Fritz. I have all of my 28mm AWI base to British Grenadier but am using it for the above.

If you are looking for Company – Brigade size games, then look no further than American War of Independence

For games with several battalions or brigades per side then 'Yankee Peas and Crackers' give a good game that totally focuses on this specific period.

Further to the above post of 20th March 2018, does anyone out there use Sword and The Flame adapted to AWI?

I was interested in the suggestions that" it needs further work. I'm cutting down musketry ranges and effect".

A friend and I had a test game yesterday and it worked quite well.

If you are looking for a game where the maneuver elements are regiments then Regimental Fire and Fury provides a great game. As mentioned by others there is a supplement you can download from their website for AWI. I made some minor tweaks to the rules and really enjoy the game. We usually play with 8 to 10 players with 4 brigades per side and get a conclusion in about 3 hours. I put on a game at a convention about 1.5 years ago with 12 players each commanding a brigade.
