Jerk would be a compliment. Wrote his own medal recommendations during WW1 for gallantry while nowhere near the action. Kept a Phillipino mistress imprisoned in Washington by making sure she didn't have clothing to go outside her rooms. Falsely claimed to have visited the front in New Guinea but in fact never left his headquarters in Australia and circulated photos with fake descriptions of location. Most of the targets of his 'Island hopping' campaign in the Pacific conveniently had assets owned by the MacArthur family or their friends. |

Pretty commonly known even by people with a cursory interest in history. The biggest bio of him was called American Caesar – THAT is pretty telling. |

Recommended every unit on Bataan/Corrigedor for the Presidential Unit Citation, except the 4th Marines. Stated that they got enough good press as it was. Being a former Marine I can't stand him. That said, he did have two moments that we should all be greatful for, 1) The Inchon landing was brillant and helped shorten that war and 2) he defied the president and didn't let the Soviets bring troops into Japan and get an occupation zone. Can you imagine the Cold War if the Soviets had owned one of the main islands of Japan? |

Opinions vary on Inchon. His advance on Seoul was a slow grind and could have been handled better. Also he did throw it all away later by ignoring warnings of the Chinese threat. |

History is always "clearer" after the fact. Many of these complaints could easily be reworded such as, "Despite the suggestion other venues may have been easier to fight in successfully, General MacArthur stayed true to his word and returned to liberate the Philippines from Japanese occupation." It is clear the author is biased and while that may make news headlines through sensationalism, it is far from good history. |

"1) The Inchon landing was brillant and helped shorten that war" Actually he was extremely lucky, the Chinese warned the NKs that it was likely that the US would land at Inchon but they ignored the warning. |

Douglas MacArthur was a highly overrated general whose fame resulted more from his limelight-hogging and being a media darling than as a military strategist. His well known quote "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away" is a rather fitting end to his storied career. |

My dad and one of my good friend's dad were in the military in WW2 serving in the Pacific and they both had nothing but contempt for MacArthur. My dad said no one he knew liked the man. |
likes the look of the Soviet KV-1 tank, and plunges into a project to paint three of them - plus a spare KV-2 turret!
