Seems my post was a BUG victim. So be it. I'm asking if anyone has a recommendation for a good book about Lewis and Clark? Not really AWI, but I respect the opinions of many here, when it comes to American history. I'm looking for a story, rather than a dry recording of facts. Any good historic novels ala the Shaara's books? And finally how was the Ken Burns series? Worth watching? |

Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. |

Stephen Ambrose's book, "Undaunted Courage" is a solid introduction to the expedition. Like all of his books it reads well. It's the traditional version of the story, but full of interesting detail. The Ken Burns documentary is very good. Ambrose is widely featured in it. But it also includes native voices and revisionists like James Ronda. If you like Ken Burns work, you'll like this too. |

Ditto on "undaunted courage". I'm using it for an American Louisiana purchase version of the Congo game. |

I'll jump on the Ambrose bandwagon. |

I've been meaning to read Ambrose for years. Must get to it one of these days… |

After you're done with Ambrose, you might try "Seduced By the West," by Laurie Winn Carlson. She writes about the parade of American military expeditions into the west after L and C, and how they were intended to provoke fear and a possible war into Spain. It's a quick, easy, and thought-provoking read. I've put together a project for a hypothetical conflict with Spain leading up to the Louisiana Purchase and again in 1810 just prior to the Mexican revolt. Fertile ground for a game. |
